Allergycentre Description

The David Hide Asthma and Allergy Research Centre is a registered charity based at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport on the Isle of Wight.

On the background of a long history of research over several decades, we opened our own designated building in 1995 and have been undertaking world-class research alongside vital NHS care ever since!

We have a very strong history of internationally renowned research which is used by doctors, nurses and research centres all over the world!

We have a research team that include universities across the UK, Europe and the USA. Alongside charitable and NHS funding we have also successfully won several research grants over the past few decades that have allowed us to continue our vital work.

Our most famous research studies include:

• The 1989 Isle of Wight Birth Cohort Study:
Children born on the Isle of Wight between 1st January 1989 and 28th February 1990 were recruited at birth to allow the monitoring of the natural history of asthma and allergies up until aged 26. The 26 year follow up is happening right now!

• The 3rd Generation Study:
The young people in the birth cohort are now producing their own babies and are being followed-up in a similar way to their parents

• Isle of Wight Allergy Prevention Study:
120 women with a high risk of developing allergic disease changed their diet while breast feeding and used ways to eliminate hose dust mite allergen from their homes to see if this reduced the likelihood of their children developing allergies.

• Immune Tolerance in Early Childhood (ITEC):
Testing the idea that the risk of developing allergic disease is determined in early life.
and
Mite Allergy Prevention Study (MAPS):
Studying the effect of Sublingual Immunotherapy on the development of asthma and allergy.

• Food Allergy & Intolerance Research (FAIR);
A grant from the Foods Standards Agency (FSA) funded a five year study into the prevalence and incidence of food allergies in children.

PS. The Allergy Centre also measures the daily pollen count used by the Met Office for the whole of England…. . not many people know that!
