Alston Wholefoods Description

Alston Wholefoods
“A little gem in the heart of the north Pennines”
Situated in the heart of Alston, we are a Workers’ Co-operative dedicated to supplying quality products at reasonable prices. Our aims are to support local producers, reduce food miles and support Fair Trade. We are always happy to source hard-to-get ingredients, and as we order on a weekly basis, we can usually supply you within a week of your order. We can make up hampers to your requirements, and also sell gift vouchers.
We stock a wide range of wholefoods – organic and fairly traded wherever possible – over 40 varieties of local cheese, delicatessen items and our range of items for special diets includes Genius bread, gluten free breakfast cereals, biscuits, crackers, pasta, ice creams, chocolate, snacks, sauces and jams.
Local products include Cumberland Mustard and Moorlands Candles – both made in Alston; bacon, pancetta, cold meats and salamis from Shaws Meats and Slacks; jams and pickles from Wild and Fruitful, Claire’s Handmade and Friendly Food and Drink; soaps and lotions from Alnwick Apothecary and Essential Spirit; Indian sauces and chutneys from Mr. Vikki and Trees Can’t Dance; ice creams and sorbets from Beckleberrys, Cream o’ Galloway and Doddington Farm; flours from The Watermill and Gilchester Farm; oils and condiments from Uncle Roys; soft drinks from Fentimans; fruit cordials from Thorncroft; honey from Chain Bridge and Nook Farm; garden plants and herbs from Pennine Perennials.

Our local cow, goat and sheep cheeses come from Thornby Moor Dairy, Appleby Creamery, Doddington Dairy, Wardhall Dairy, Birdoswald, Northumberland Cheese Company and Shepherd’s Purse Creamery. We also stock a variety of premium cheddars, Stilton, Wensleydale, Cheshire, Parmesan, Manchego, Swiss Gruyère, Jarlsberg, buffalo mozzarella, feta and haloumi.
Other products include organic yoghurt, goats’ milk, cream and butter; dried herbs and spices sold by weight; organic and herbal teas; single variety coffees; a selection of non-dairy milks and ice creams; an extensive range of Far Eastern products; chocolate and snacks; vegetarian and vegan products; fruit juices and soft drinks; and a selection of fresh seasonal herbs and spices.
Our main supplier delivers on Thursdays, with orders taken up until 2pm on Wednesdays; other suppliers deliver fortnightly. Discounts are available on bulk orders. You can order by phone, e-mail or in person at the shop, where our friendly and knowledgeable staff will be happy to help you to find an ingredient or product.

Ideas for St Valentine's Day. A heart-shaped Brie from our beloved Appleby Creamery (you already know you adore their bries), a box of Love Tea, a choice of gorgeous chocolates, and the ingredients for a scrumptuous meal. And don't forget the candles. You'll find all of these at Alston Wholefoods. Treat your loved one.

While the Co-op Supermarket is temporarily closed for a full refurbishment, remember that we sell a wide range of products that you might normally buy there: eggs, butter & magarines, cheese, pasta & rice, tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits & cakes, tinned foods, flour, snacks, chocolate, cereals, rye bread, nan bread and chapatis and much, much more.
For fresh-baked bread and pies, go to Saddlers at the top of the town.

Cheese of the Week: ISLE OF MULL CHEDDAR
Isle of Mull cheddar doesn't taste like any other cheddar and it doesn't look the same either. It's a pale ivory colour with a very sharp, fruity tang, thanks to the unusual diet of the cows that eat the fermented grain from the nearby Tobermory whisky distillery. It is made on Sgriob-ruadh farm by the Reade family.

It's arrived! The Forced Rhubarb is here and on sale in the shop. Find out more about how it is grown and recipe ideas on our website: http://alstonwholefoods.com/rhubarb/

It's the start of the forced rhubarb season - a Northern delicacy totally different to the stuff we grow outdoors later in the season. We are considering getting some in from the legendary Oldroyds in the Rhubarb Triangle. It would cost £4.00 per 500g. Which is slightly cheaper than Waitrose.

Please let us know if you'd be interested in buying some. By the way it freezes well.

Brie De Meaux is the most famous of all the French bries. It has soft velvety texture with a tender bloomy rind. It is still traditionally artisan made from unpasteurised milk and has a rich taste underlined by sweet and buttery flavours of mushrooms, truffles and almonds. Mentioned anecdotally in writings dating back to the ninth century, this cheese is an absolute classic.
Great value at £1.68 per 100g. Just the one wheel, so when it's gone it's gone. Don't miss out!
