Animals' Refuge

About Animals' Refuge

A registered charity with a long pedigree. Founded in 1909 to campaign for better treatment of Pit Ponies and horses the charity is now a major animal rescue and re-homing charity in Cumbria. Officially The National Equine (and Smaller Animals) Defence League, the charity is better known as the Animals' Refuge. An animal welfare that cares for and finds homes for abandoned and unwanted animals as well as providing a sanctuary for some who through no fault of their own cannot find new homes. Every year the charity takes in hundreds of lost or unwanted animals (mostly dogs, cats and horses) and gives them a second chance. We work to rehabilitate animals and also prepare potential adopters for life with a new companion. Our education programme extend to schools and youth groups introducing and teaching them the different care skills needed for the animals and their role in the environment. A registered charity No. 280700
