Monkey Puzzle-d?
Not all the trees are struggling just now, this monkey puzzle is thriving in the hot weather!

A wall butterfly taking a well earned rest.
Seeing this got me thinking, especially now the big butterfly count is ongoing but are there less butterflies around?
I have not seen as many in my garden this year, especially orange tips and brimstones which I usually get to see.
... However, the Woodland Garden has been a great place to watch butterflies and I have seen clouds of Meadow Browns in recent weeks.
So pending the count results it’s difficult to be sure. If anyone out there is taking part in the count please share your thoughts.

Some unusual sights for summertime are happening just now.
The avenue leading to Antony House looks more like an autumn scene with golden leaves decorating the verges and some of the pine trees are dropping their cones casting the seeds from within. What is going on?
Well, whilst most of us are enjoying a glorious summer and prolonged dry spell, some of the trees are being put under stress and this is their response. Leaves and cones are shed as the tree has to cope with less... water, in extreme cases a tree may cast branches or possibly even become unstable.
We all know and appreciate the need for fire safety in a hot and dry and summer. However, it is also worth keeping in mind the effects of the weather on trees especially when the rain returns. A sudden intake of water after a dry spell can cause branches to snap and fall.
Stay safe this summer by being aware. If ever you should see a potential danger please tell the landowner, whoever they may be and wherever you may be visiting.

Though the land in the Tamar Valley looks dry and arid, there is still some colour to be had in the Woodland Garden....
