Celebrating this shimmering, chic and colour-changing beauty ...
Murano by Licio Zanetti Neodymium Alexandrite Handblown Art Glass Bird Sculpture, Signed, 1970s
This exceptional sculpture of handblown stylised art glass is by the glass master Licio Zanetti. This work is crafted from Alexandrite Neodymium glass and the technique used is likely Masello, given the weight, size and delicate elements of the sculpture and favoured by Licio.
... The allurement of this piece extends beyond the craftsmanship and that is in the Neodymium glass, a chemical element that is incorporated into the glass during the crafting process. Neodymium is sometimes known as Alexandrite, which changes colour from lilac under incandescent light or daylight and blue under fluorescent, household lights.

A love of the beautifully unusual ...
Bertil Vallien for (Kosta) Boda, Volcano Series, Iridescent Studio Art Glass Lamp Base, 1980s
This magnificent work of handblown Swedish art glass is by Bertil Vallien (b. 1938 - ), celebrated glass artist, sculptor, ceramist and designer.
... This piece is from the collectable 'Volcano' or 'Vulcano' series from the 'Artist Collection'. This particular piece is gently freeform and sculptural, substantial, almost boulder-like and is composed of a frosted and iridescent, purple frit-glass giving the closely freckled effect. The iridescence shows of blues, greens and golds.
Embedded in the body are threads and two discs of red which displays a golden iridescent sheen. The veined and myriad decor mimics the moments of lava fragments pooling and coloured with a resplendently oiled iridescence.

A stunning, ethereal and delicate work of handblown Fazzoletto glass.
Murano Fazzoletto Art Glass Bowl in Amber, Coral Pink and Gold Aventurine (Avventurina) 1950s
Fazzoletto translates as 'folded handkerchief' and indeed, the rippling folds of this piece mimics a gathered square of shimmering golden organza fabric. The colours in this piece include that of Natural Amber and Pink Coral within which is embedded gold and silver Aventurine.
... The Aventurine effect is like that of overlaid layers of gold leaf gently swirling and separating within the glass. Aventurine within Fazzoletto is an uncommon decor and thus, makes this piece a rarer find.
The piece is finished with a circlet of clear glass at the base, which creates a 'foot' to lightly elevate it from the surface.

Brimming with Modernist attitude ...
Bitossi by Aldo Londi 1960s Rimini Blu Series, Modernist Persiano Blue Glaze Bull Sculpture, Italian
This beautiful, handcrafted work of Mid Century Modernist stoneware was designed by Aldo Londi (b. 1911 - d. 2003) for Bitossi Ceramiche. Inspiration for the glaze is said to be taken from the Adriatic sea, off the coast of Rimini in Italy and hence the series name Rimini Blu.
... The glaze and the series, which subsequently grew from it has become iconic and the most highly collectable of Aldo Londis' work. The form of this particular piece has been crafted with superb sentience and character, the bull's captured stance is one of mid-feint and with curiosity.
The geometric 'Sgraffito' decor is very tactile, with shapes and lines being embossed into the clay during the crafting process. The glaze displays strokes of green, Persiano and deep blue, the great blend of glossy smooth glaze is interspersed with coarse grit in the clay.

A timelessly beautiful and textured Mid Mod gem ...
This beautifully bevelled work of 1970s Scandinavian Modernist design is by Pentti Sarpaneva (b.1925 - d. 1978) Finnish jewellery and decorative designer. This piece was produced by Oy Kumela glassworks for jewellers Torun Hopea.
Sarpaneva's style was influenced by elements of the rugged Finnish landscape, casting textures from materials such as tree bark and rock. Other inspirations included traditional Finnish lace and t...he metals he worked with.
The design of this piece encapsulates much of Sarpaneva's style, his inspirations and the Modernist design influences of the time. The graduating and staggered Grape purple glass surface shows off a number of textured and angular circular and semi-circular reliefs.
The form features a central column and is also bevelled at the base, making the overall shape jewel-like and heightening the ability for light refractions.
The piece is finished with the bronze collar that is decorated in Sarpaneva's rugged lace design which can be found in his jewellery designs.

A magnificent work of boldly geometric and striking Swedish Mid Mod design ... 😎
Marian Zawadzki for Tilgmans Keramik, 1965 Signed and Dated Scandinavian Modern Sgraffito Sculptural Floor Vase
This exceptional work of Swedish Mid Century, Modernist design is a floor vase with a rare design by Marian Zawadzki (b. 1912 - d. 1978) professor, artist and ceramist for Tilgmans Keramik of Gothenburg, Sweden.
... Zawadzki's experimentation of the Sgraffito technique brought great popularity and appreciation for Tilgman's ceramics and his work became exemplary for the Tilgman's product line. Zawadzki's use of the Sgraffito technique is absolutely a feature in this piece.
True to the roots of Modernist design, the simple form and striking decor of this vase speaks to an honest expression of the natural earthenware. The texture of the earthenware is very tactile, with sections left deliberately coarse and unglazed. The unglazed sections create confident contrast against the individually glazed sections of boldly geometric, Sgraffito decor.
The vase is finished with an interior of gloss glaze that is coloured in a Spearmint green towards the neck and a softer cream towards the base.

Like a chocolate cup with sprinklings of hundreds and thousands ... in art glass form 😁
Bertil Vallien for Kosta Boda, Tornado Series, Mini Iridescent & Coloured Candy Cane Art Glass Bowl
This abstract expression work of handblown Swedish art glass is by Bertil Vallien (b. 1938 - ), celebrated glass artist, sculptor, ceramist and designer.
... This piece is from the collectable 'Tornado' series from Boda's 'Artist Collection'. The Artist Collection concept was introduced by Vallien to give glass artists the freedom for personal, creative expression and to remove the 'mass produced' feeling. Pieces are limited edition studio works and individual to the artist that created them. As each piece is handblown, this also makes the final decor of each piece unique.
The exterior of this piece is a lightly translucent Espresso brown that is trimmed with a pearly-golden rim. Within the brown glass is embedded the multitude of brightly coloured strips of 'candy cane' glass, placed at random. The candy canes are coloured in yellow, white, orange and lilac and the whole piece is finished in a rainbow iridescence inside and out.

Sleek and iconic Scandinavian Modern design by Vicke Lindstrand (b. 1904 - d. 1983).
1950s Vicke Lindstrand 'Zebra' series for Kosta, Modernist Red and White Stripe, Cased Glass Vase
Lindstrand was a Swedish textile and ceramic designer and painter, and is considered as one of the most influential 20th-century glass artists and a pioneer of glass art.
... His prolific career included many design highlights, including his ability to excel at a technique called cased glass (known to Murano collectors as 'Sommerso'), in which a vividly coloured or patterned section of glass is surrounded by and seems to float within a clear crystal body.
This particular piece is a rare shape of the Zebra series and very much embodies Lindstrand's expertise in the Sommerso technique. It also embodies the tenets of simplicity, minimalism and functionality influences of the Scandinavian Modern design movement.
The core of rich, gradient Wine red around the central chamber is surrounded by visual overlapping of the white ribbons of glass. Depending on the angle, you can see the space between the white ribbons and the red core, that the white ribbons are in fact a separate layer. All of this is suspended in the thick-walled, curved and clear crystal glass form that is characteristic of Scandinavian art glass.
Such is Lindstrand's skill in creating this piece and in the beauty of the final piece became the cover feature for Martin Miller's book 'The complete guide to 20th Century Antiques'.

Beautifully atmospheric vibes, moodily mysterious ...?
Glit Pottery, Iceland, REAL Lava 'Fat Lava' in Rare Slate Blue Glaze Ceramic Bud Vase, 1970s
Germany has Fat Lava, France has Foam Lava, well - Iceland has Lava, real lava (that can be sharp to touch!) incorporated into their glaze.
... The skill in creating this glaze is evident at every level, varying shades of glossy Slate grey-blue and Charcoal grey drip glaze flows between the shards of lava.
It's easy to see why these pieces are sought after and how the skill in creating these pieces is being celebrated. The poetic colour palette of these works reflects the original inspiration that sparked it's creation - the Icelandic tundra which the mineral, clay and lava was taken from.
