Knee ligament and Cartilage injuries:
Ligament and cartilage injuries in the knee can put you on the sidelines -- fast. They hurt a lot and may limit what you can do. Ligaments are tough bands of tissue that connect the bones in your body. There are four ligaments in the knee that are prone to injury. ACL, PCL, MCL AND LCL.
... The cartilage in the knee joint is called the medial and lateral meniscus. They are two large C-shaped cartilages that are positioned on the top of the tibia bone at the knee. They may become damaged as a consequence of aging, arthritis, and wearing away of the meniscus causing a degenerative meniscal tear. It is characterised by Intermittent swelling of the knee joint. The knee with a torn meniscus feels "tight." Popping, especially when climbing up or down stairs is very common.
What Does a Knee Cartilage or Ligament Injury Feel Like?
You may have: Pain, often sudden and severe A loud pop or snap during the injury Swelling within the first 24 hours after the injury A feeling of looseness in the joint Inability to put weight on the joint without pain, or any weight at all A feeling of giving way Locking of the joint

Knee pain in children and Adolescents
Osgood‚ÄďSchlatter disease
It causes pain in the front lower part of the knee. This is usually at the ligament and bone attachment. A bump at the front of the knee on the tibia. Intense knee pain is usually the presenting symptom that occurs during activities such as running, jumping, squatting, and especially ascending or descending stairs and during kneeling.
... Treatment ‚Äď Proper diagnosis is essential. So visit a Physio. Rest from aggravating activities in the first instance. Progress to manual therapy treatment followed by corrective exercise.
Chondromalacia Patellae
Chondromalacia Patellae (also known as CMP) is inflammation of the underside of the knee cap and softening of the cartilage. The cartilage under the kneecap is a natural shock absorber, and overuse, injury, and many other factors can cause increased deterioration and breakdown of the cartilage. The cartilage is no longer smooth and therefore movement and use is very painful. It often affects young individuals engaged in active sports. The condition may result from acute injury to the patella or chronic friction between the patella and a groove in the femur through which it passes during knee flexion.
Treatment: In the absence of cartilage damage, pain at the front of the knee due to overuse can be managed with a combination of POLICE (Protection, Optimal Loading, Ice, Compression and Elevation), anti inflammatory meds for s hort while and of course Physiotherapy

WHAT IS A TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT
Its an orthopaedic procedure where the articular surfaces (end of the bone) of the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone) are replaced. The main reason people have a knee replacement is that they have most commonly over a period of time noticed ‚ÄĘ Increased pain at the knee joint that in the latter stages can affect sleep at night time... ‚ÄĘ Decreased mobility to the point that they may require use of a walking aid
The surgery can take about an hour and most frequently is under general anaesthetic. Physiotherapy pre-surgery has proven to be useful in maximising the strength of the muscles of the affected leg. Post surgery Physiotherapy will help to reduce pain, restore range of movement, improve strength and help you function maximally.
Here at Apple Physio all of our team have vast experience dealing with Total Knee Replacements so if you need any advice please don’t hesitate to contact us. IS YOUR MENISCUS CAUSING YOUR KNEE PAIN? -The meniscus is a cartilage structure which is found within the knee joint. This cartilage structure acts as a shock absorber between the thighbone and shinbone. -An injury may occur to the meniscus due to twisting or direct impact. These injuries are common during sporting activities. A tear may happen when sudden twisting of the knee occurs while the foot is still planted on the ground - Diagnosis - A full battery of diagnosis tests... will be completed to determine a meniscus injury. Patients may have tears which cause few problems, while others may have tears which cause pain affecting activities of their daily living.
Acute, traumatic tears, are typically treated surgically. The goal is to repair the meniscus structure.
Treatment - Physiotherapy interventions will include manual and exercise-based therapies. Physiotherapy will aim to restore full range of movement and strength within the early stages of healing. Next Physiotherapy will work to restore strength, balance and proprioception. Late stage rehab will include dynamic exercises such as jumping and directional change movements.

What is Runner’s Knee? (PFJ Syndrome)
-The patella moves up and down in a groove at the front of the knee - if something causes the patella to move in a dysfunctional way, the soft tissue between the kneecap and the knee can become irritated, - If one side of the quadriceps is stronger or tighter than the other, it can cause the kneecap to pull to one side and over time become irritated.... -This condition is characterized by pain felt on the inside or behind of the patella with activities that require repetitive bending of the knee. There may be a sensation of crepitus, clicking or grinding and some people report that their knee suddenly gives way
How can physiotherapy help?
The first step in effective treatment is to exclude any other conditions and have Physiotherapist confirm the diagnosis Once these factors have been identified, you will be provided with a specific treatment program to best approach your condition. Hands on treatment, biomechanical analysis, exercise rehab and orthotics are all possible solutions to the problem

What is Patella Tendinopathy?
- Patella tendinopathy, also known as jumper’s knee, is an overuse disorder characterised by pain at the base of the patella (kneecap) with activities such as squatting, sitting or going up and down stairs. - The hallmark sign of patella tendinopathy is sharp, localised pain in the patella tendon just below the base of the patella - It usually develops gradually over time due to prolonged overloading of the tendon... - How can physiotherapy help? …the first step to effective treatment is an accurate diagnosis followed by manual hands on therapy and at the appropriate time a targeted exercise program involving isometric and eccentric muscle contractions. These types of movements have been shown to help stimulate healthy tendon tissue to increase strength and support the damaged tissue, ultimately reducing pain.
