🦷 Decay 🦷
Decay happens then the enamel and dentine of a tooth become softened by acid attack when you eat or drink things containing sugars. Over time the acid makes a hole (cavity) in the tooth.
... There are no symptoms in the early stages of decay, but we may be able to spot them during a checkup or in routine xrays. This is why you should attend as regularly as your dentist recommends - a small cavity is much easier to treat!
When the cavity reaches the dentine it may become sensitive, and as the decay gets closer to the dental pulp you may suffer from toothache. It's best to get them checked out as soon as you have symptoms, if not you could lose a tooth that could've been saved!
You can easily prevent decay at home by: Brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste Cleaning between your teeth with floss or an interdental brush once a day Limiting your intake of sugary foods to mealtimes

💧 Fluoride 💧
Fluoride is a natural mineral that is found in all drinking water and in many foods. The amount of fluoride found in water varies - the average fluoride limit in Grantham last year was 0.813 milligrammes per litre.
Getting fluoride from different sources gives you the best protection from tooth decay - it can be found in water, toothpaste and professional treatments like varnish.
... Fluoride helps to protect teeth against acid attacks and can reverse early stages of tooth decay. If you start using fluoride as a child, you are likely to have less decay as an adult. Children who have fluoride when their teeth are developing also tend to have shallower grooves in their teeth, so plaque can be more easily removed when brushing.
There are many differing reports about fluoride, but the scientific conclusion is that it has great benefits to dental health, helps to reduce decay, and causes no harmful side effects to general health.

🦷 Gum Disease 🦷
Gum disease is a very common condition where there is swelling, soreness or infection of the tissues supporting the teeth. There are two main forms of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontal disease.
... Gingivitis is the early stages of gum disease, and if it goes untreated periodontitis can develop.
The most important way to prevent gum disease is maintaining a good oral hygiene routine. We recommend: 🦷 Brushing your teeth twice a day - before bed and one other occasion - for a least 2 minutes, with a fluoride toothpaste 🦷 Using floss or interdental brushes once a day

🍼 Baby Bottle Decay 🍼
Even though they are temporary, a child's baby teeth are important, and can still get cavities. Children need strong, healthy teeth to chew their food, speak and to help make sure their adult teeth come in correctly.
... Baby Bottle Tooth Decay most often occurs in the upper front teeth, but other teeth may also be affected.
One common cause is the frequent, prolonged exposure of the baby’s teeth to drinks that contain sugar. Tooth decay can occur when the baby is put to bed with a bottle, or when a bottle is used as a pacifier for a fussy baby.
To help prevent decay: 🍼 When your child’s teeth come in, brush them gently with a child-size toothbrush and a smear (or grain of rice sized amount) of fluoride toothpaste until the age of 3. 🍼 Place only formula, milk or breast milk in bottles. Avoid filling the bottle with liquids such as sugar water, juice or soft drinks. 🍼 Infants should finish their bedtime and nap time bottles before going to bed. 🍼 Encourage healthy eating habits.

🥤 Think before you drink!! 🥛
Did you know that erosive food and drinks are just as damaging to your teeth as sugar?
We soaked dirty 2p coins in Coke, Energy drink, Apple Juice, diluted orange squash (no added sugar) and water for 3 hours
... Each drink apart from the water cleaned the 2p thoroughly due to their erosive ingredients 😮
Remember: 🍊 Fruits are healthy in our diet but are quite erosive and can cause our teeth to wear and become sensitive if consumed too much. 🥤 Limit these drinks to mealtimes and try to drink through a straw so your teeth aren’t over exposed. 💧 Drink water between meals

How should you help your child to care for their teeth and prevent cavities?
🦷 Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste - we advise that you help your child to brush and continue to monitor their brushing as they get older. 🦷 Try not to brush straight after eating or drinking, try to leave at least an hour between. Brushing straight after eating can cause damage to your teeth due to the acidity in food and drink. 🦷Eat a well-balanced diet that limits starchy or sugary fo...ods, which produce plaque acids that cause tooth decay. 🦷 If they are going to consume sugary foods, it is best to consume them at meal times - this is when the amount of saliva produced in the mouth is greater and will therefore better help protect your child’s teeth.
Establishing good habits early on will help encourage your child to continue them into adulthood.
If you have any questions about your child's oral health contact us on 01476563105.
