Arbeia, South Shields Roman Fort Description

Arbeia Roman Fort is the finest reconstructed Roman fort in Britain. Built in around AD160, Arbeia guarded the entrance to the River Tyne and became the military supply base for forts along Hadrian's Wall.
Today, you can see reconstructions of the original Roman buildings including the commanding officer's house and barrack block. You can also go inside the imposing West Gate, and see one of the most significant collections of Roman finds in the country.
