About Arcelormittal Orbit
At 114. 5m high, the ArcelorMittal Orbit is the UK's tallest sculpture offering views of over 20 miles across London including The City and Canary Wharf.
Arcelormittal Orbit Description
The ArcelorMittal Orbit is the winning entry to a competition organised by the Greater London Authority to design an accessible work of public art that would be an iconic centre-piece for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. It is designed by Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond. The ArcelorMittal Orbit is a landmark sculpture, showcasing the versatility and strength of steel, it is located within the site of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, of which ArcelorMittal is a Tier Two supporter.
The ArcelorMittal Orbit is 114. 5 metres tall, with two observation decks, at 80m and 76m. At least 60% of the steel used in the Orbit, which comes from ArcelorMittal's facilities around the world, is recycled from scrap. There are lifts to go up for everyone, and down too for those that need them, although visitors are encouraged to walk down, using the spiral staircase. Situated on the Olympic Park between the Stadium and the Aquatics Centre, the ArcelorMittal Orbit is the UK's tallest sculpture.
The realisation of the Kapoor and Balmond vision has been made possible by Arup whose engineers and technical experts are experienced in major artistic collaborations. Ushida Findlay Architects has completed the design and seamless integration of the architectural elements of the sculpture, including the visitor staircase that winds around the ArcelorMittal Orbit.
The ArcelorMittal Orbit was completed and handed over to the London Legacy Development Corporation in May 2012. The London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) will operate the ArcelorMittal Orbit in the summer of 2012. After a period of transformation, the Legacy Company is expected to then re-open the ArcelorMittal Orbit as a visitor attraction within the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
