Architect - John Forward: Vanishing Point Art & Design

I have been abroad - studying Italian architecture - but am back at my drawing board. This picture was taken in Venice by my lovely assistant, sadly Venice is flooding at the moment. Such a beautiful but fragile place.

Even small extensions and a bit of remodelling can have a profound effect on the efficiency of a floor plan; it is possible to create inspiring spaces within a tight budget. I am currently working on two bungalows both of which need alteration and extension to suit modern space standards.The bonus is that I can also improve the elevations. My work can be very rewarding, for me as well as the client.

I have been taking some photos of one of my recently completed projects. This is a lovely house with ’wow’ factor and panoramic views. It has very high levels of insulation, thermal mass, whole house ventilation with heat recovery, photovoltaics and Tesla battery storage. So, careful design and a lifetime of experience produces good ‘eco’ architecture! Simple.

And the newest commission is to design an extension to a modest holiday let to provide a new living area with ‘wow’ factor. Looking forward to some ‘out of the box’ design solutions for that one! We have also discussed a new outside seating area, so that the outside becomes an extension of the new dining area. I will use the experience and design features we used here at our Widemouth home /art studio.

I have been gaining new design commissions. One is a conversion of a cob outbuilding beside a farmhouse this will provide dependent relative’s accommodation and will need some sensitive conservation work. Conservation architecture work is exciting - blending modern needs with the historic sensitivity of the original building.

It is gloriously hot here in Widemouth Bay, the sea is glistening - and there was even a bit of surf last night when I stopped my architectural work. The surf board looked a little too inviting to ignore. Almost all of my work is now done on CAD - Computer Aided Design - so I sit at 2 computer screens instead of a drawing board - difficult when the sun is shining and the gulls are calling....
