A great way to conclude the Argyle Tennis year. Well subscribed Xmas party and presentation evening. Big thanks must go to Alison and her social committee in organising fabulous fresh food at such a low price. A lot of hard work , but much appreciated by all. Also thanks to Ian for looking after the bar, Karen for the enjoyable adult games (call my bluff teams very believable, even if the pronunciations were very poor from the chair!) And to Jo and Elise in organising the k...ids games. Unfortunately no more socials until 2019, and this has set the bar high, so for those that did miss out, watch out for the dates for upcoming events. Congratulations to all the contestants from the club tournament events, adults and juniors, 24 events awarded on the evening. Of special note our irrepressible adult club champions, Simon Drake and Elise Bond. Will they be challenged next year!?πŸ€”πŸŽΎπŸŽΎ

Could the adults be out done by the juniors? There were five junior leagues this year. 10u mixed, 12u boys, 14u boys, 16u boys and 16u girls. Argyle juniors once again were in good form, winning three of the five leagues - 12u and 16u boys and 16u girls. Another great achievement by our next generation!... Well done to all our players: Girls: Emma Sajan, Ruby Hughes, Annabel Riding, Lydia Thompson, Olivia Dodgins, lucie and Hattie Jones. Boys: Joe Hughes, Ben and Harrison Coates, Will Jones, Luke and Jack Golding, Harvey Crabtree, Dan Doherty
Junior club tournament is up next, so watch out for entry information. Great 2018!

And so the adult and junior league matches have now come to an end for another year. For our adult teams this has been one of our most successful in recent years. The first team, despite ongoing injury problems with the men, finished in fifth place, one below last year. The ladies, led by captain Jo displayed their abilities in holding the team together. The second team, under the experienced guidance of captain Johnny S, had an outstanding season, finishing as champions and ...gain promotion. The third team, with new captain Anthony J, prospered under his leadership and narrowly missed out on winning their league by one point. Their runaway second place secures promotion! The fourth team completed the successful season for the teams. With captain Tracy T leading the way and once again displaying her enthusiasm and knowledge in organising teams, her team deservedly won their league , and are promoted as champions. Well done to all the players for their commitment and enthusiasm, not just in the leagues, but in making Argyle a prominent and enjoyable club to play tennis. Watch out next for info on our own club tournament. This will be out within the next week.

Good celebrations last night at the club. 1st, 2nd and 4th teams successfully played last matches. 3rd team play tonight, and reports will follow! Argyle army on the march!

User

Congratulations to the third team and captain Anthony this week, on successfully gaining promotion. The team had to play back to back league matches on Tuesday and Wednesday, and won both, in addition to finishing the semifinal of the Joseph Lord cup competition. A fine win by Karen and Ruby meant the team progressed to the final. The Final held on Thursday evening meant a third match in three days. A narrow defeat 3-2 in the final, but some good matches and a great effort. Last league matches of the season next week, and a report to follow on the continued successes of the 2nd and 4th teams, and for the club overall, seniors and juniors.

Hope everyone enjoying Wimbledon. Take a few minutes to watch a player not the rally, and see the footwork needed to find the point of contact on balance. Our teams had a good week with all four teams winning First team mid table. Second team top of their league. Second team at the top of their league. Third team fighting hard an in second place, looking for promotion.... Fourth team Leading their division and looking like promotion this year Watch this space for info on junior league results, as they win 3 out of the 5 leagues. Roll On way! the Argyle winning express!

Last week saw the halfway stage for the adult league season. The first team managed to get an important win to stabilise a half way position. The second team maintained their unbeaten record to top the table, as did the fourth team. That left the third team, missing injured captain, narrowly lost their unbeaten run. Looking good for the start of the second half of the season this week?! Not so. Three first team men go on holiday. One second team man on holiday, with another t...ied up at work. Third team men still have captain injured. Thank goodness for our reliable ladies! First team understandably lose to Blundellsands who they beat first time round. The second team pull off an unlikely draw with a great effort by the elevated men backing up the ever present ladies showing the way. Showing some strength in depth the shored up third and fourth teams both scored resounding victories, 16-0 and 15-1 respectively. Thus second and fourth teams still heading their respective leagues, with the third team still pushing for promotion in second place. First team have a lot of work to do, but men will need to back up the ladies better in the remaining matches. Our First Ladies still remain undefeated! Great effort. Second ladies still turning out nursing injuries but commitment setting an example! More to come in week nine.

Interesting week 6 in the league. Fourth team no match due to only 7 teams in the league. Second team no match due to concession by opponents, unable to field a team due new registration system. One can only assume that changes must be made to this, as we all want to play tennis, and regulation should not prevent this from happening! Third team, lose their unbeaten start to the season, going 9-7 down. On a brighter note, with the return of first man, the first team record a well needed victory.

Week 5 of the Southport and district leagues continued as last week for our teams. Second, third and fourth teams continued on their winning ways, producing strong wins. Unfortunately the first team suffered another defeat and need there injured men to return.

User

What no draws!! Another good week of results for the second, third and fourth teams. Three strong wins continue the winning ways for all these teams, with no losses recorded so far this season. First team struggling with injuries and new league registering system thwarting their ability to strengthen the team, suffered a loss this week, on three courts and no lights!
