Before the clock strikes 12 we’d just like to wish all of our loyal readers and customers a happy and healthy new year. Thank you from all of us for continuing to read and support Aroundtown. We’ve had another brilliant year - moved into new offices, welcomed our new writer, Joanne, and said goodbye to Amber for a short while as she starts her new role as Mummy to this little lady. Lots to look forward to in 2019 so continue to keep an eye out for South Yorkshire’s finest (in our eyes) free magazine!

💎Our Diamond Girl 💎 She was once told by a fashion magazine editor that with her Yorkshire accent and leggy 6ft frame, she'd never make it in the fashion industry. But like a true diamond, Mexborough-born miner's daughter, Debbie Wingham, didn't let this dull her shine. Instead, she proved her critics wrong and has since gone on to become the world's most expensive couturier and cake artist, creating £million garments and larger-than-life cakes for the rich and powerful. But ...she's still a Yorkshire lass at heart.
Read her inspiring story of rising from the embers of coal dust to achieve a glittering career here: https://bit.ly/2OQf8yp

Now that we have had the chance to process the shock of yesterday morning's sad news, we'd like to share a tribute to our dear friend, Don Booker MBE, who has sadly passed away.
Don had become like a father and grandfather to us over the past five years and was always there to support us or have a cup of tea ready when we were in Barnsley.
His life was one well lived and well travelled, spending 50 years as an acclaimed motoring writer and dedicating 65 years to the Barnsley... Chronicle, 10 of which were as Editor.
To keep his hand in, he continued to write fascinating, anecdote-filled motoring pieces for Aroundtown until his passing.
He had friends in high places and could count the likes of Michael Parkinson as his wingman - especially from the days as two young reporters riding through Barnsley on a motorbike.
Don also celebrated the town he grew up in, giving back to its people through his endless charitable work.
He leaves behind a lasting legacy as Mr Barnsley to most, but also a beloved husband of 62 years to Freda, father to Julie and her husband Simon and grandad to Lucy.
He shared so many wonderful stories with us over the years and we are proud to share his with you in a look back through his life, as told by Don back in May 2015.

Do you recognise this cheeky face?
A little birdy told us he did in fact grow up to be Rotherham's inspirational marathon man, Ray Matthews.
But long before his 75-marathon feat, Ray was a pupil at St Bede's Catholic Primary in Rotherham.
... This year, as part of St. Bede's 150 Years Heritage celebrations, Ray has been in school inspiring a new generation with tales of his running days in the hopes to get all students running or walking one mile every day in a bid to improve learning, health and well-being.
They even went on to win the first Run A Mile a Day Schools' Cup as part of the Pawson 10K and Fun Run in May.
But the school now need a new running track for the kids to get active on.
Could you help?
Find out more about the school's 150th birthday here http://www.aroundtownmagazine.co.uk/st-be des-is-sesquicent…/

Big thanks to the Ethel Trust Community Barge team for this wonderful framed photo of Ethel herself.
A humbly-accepted token of their gratitude to us for sharing the amazing work they do on-board to help children and young people unlock confidence from within.
Looks great on the ATP office wall and will forever remind us of our time on the water with the volunteers.

⚽🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 DO YOU BELIEVE? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿⚽
Barnsley did in 1997. Surely we can tonight.
Our 4th and final football story for today tells of a new film that has been produced to commemorate 20 years since Barnsley Football Club made it into the Premier League.
... Written and produced by GRAFT Agency, Daydream Believers relives those glory days under Danny Wilson with stories from Neil Redfearn and co plus archive footage.
Let's all keep believing and hopefully we'll be singing Cheer Up Modric at the end of today!

⚽🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 WAISTCOAT WEDNESDAY 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿⚽
Hands up who's cracking the Southgate waistcoat out tonight to watch the match?
If England win tonight, we'd love to see The Wortley Arms Andy Gabbitas wear one in the Three Lions' honour as he and his football rival friend Aled Williams March to the Arch next Sunday in aid of Prostate Cancer UK!
... Owl Andy and Blade Aled are tackling 26 miles around London as they trek from West Ham's Olympic Park Stadium to the glorious arch over Wembley with pit-stops at Brisbane Rd, new White Hart Lane and the Emirates.
They've already beaten their £1,000 target so let's see if we can help them reach £2,000 by next Sunday. http://www.aroundtownmagazine.co.uk/march -to-the-arch/
