About Arwel Roberts Osteopathy

My name is Arwel Roberts and I am a fully registered osteopath working in Maidstone & Gravesend, Kent. The aim of this page is to share useful information, share my experiences, and answer your questions and queries on osteopathy and health.

Arwel Roberts Osteopathy Description

As an osteopath my aim is to help you with your aches and pains, stiffnesses, injuries, and other problems that hinder your daily life. Your issue may have started this morning or decades ago but all can be helped with osteopathy.

But how?
I use a range of techniques to target different structures in the body including muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and fascia.

These techniques vary from massage, and exercise /lifestyle advice, to mobilisation (the moving of joints), and manipulation (the clicky bit), used in a treatment plan tailored for you. A combination of your medical history and a thorough examination on your first visit allows me to consider your age, fitness, general health, medical and injury history, current movement ability, and create a treatment plan tailored for you.

Back pain, knee pain, hip mobility, and foot and ankle mobility, one move can help it all! - The sit to stand a regression to the squat is a simple way to reintroduce a movement that may be weak in many of the older generation. The sit to stand can increase strength and stability in many older patients, reducing the risk of fragility, falls and their complications. - Those who sit to stand comfortably how comfortable are you squatting?... - Not until my first year in university did I realise that my mobility wasn’t brilliant, when beginning to weight train with friends I soon realised I couldn’t comfortably sit back into a squat. But with a little persistence and time, sitting unaided in a squat is comfortable for several minutes. I often use this movement to warm up for the majority of my activities, and also to loosen up after sitting for too long. - A simple way to begin is finding which of the steps you find difficult, for those that aren’t held try starting with 5 repetitions for 5 sets and build from there if you find that comfortable, either add a rep to each set or add another set, and continue to progress in a timely manner. - Those that involve sitting in, try 30 seconds and see how you feel. Try doing 3-5 sets of whatever amount of time you feel comfortable and again progress in a timely manner. - ⚠ As always move within your limits, progress over time and when confident and strong enough. - If you are suffering in pain ensure you receive professional advice for what suits you and your pain as these exercises do not replace professional assessment and advice.

Dips are another simple way to develop upper limb strength. Demanding a lot from your shoulders, chest, back, and arms it is an easy way to ask more of your upper limbs than the daily typing, or the opening and closing of doors. - The first step of this exercise can be done at home using a sturdy chair, or the bottom of the sofa. So even if you don’t have a gym membership or some bars, you can still make steps to get stronger. - Experiment with the range of your movement, sp...eed, and repetitions to change the demand on the body. - ⚠ As always move within your limits, progress over time and when confident and strong enough. - If you are suffering in pain ensure you receive professional advice for what suits you and your pain as these exercises do not replace professional assessment and advice.

Happy Halloween!🎃
Vitamin D is important for strong healthy bones, and other bodily functions 😁
A few Foods containing vitamin D include oily fish, red meat, liver, and eggs.
... Our main source of vitamin D is sunlight and we should consider supplementation when exposed to less sun (autumn, winter, early spring).
Consider supplementing 10mcg of vitamin D during autumn, winter, and early spring, especially as the clock's have now gone back!🍁❄️
Those at risk of low levels should consider taking vitamin D supplementation all year round.
Adults take no more than 100mcg a day. Children aged 1-10 take no more than 50 mcg a day. Infants under 12 months take no more than 25mcg a day and if on formula do not supplement at all.
Have a great evening!

Hip Hinging I don’t believe that any movement itself is dangerous, only the variables that you apply to that movement and for that reason it is important we can control as many of those variables as is possible. We should be comfortable bending and moving our backs as it is healthy for us, but it is also important to be able to control our bodies and know how to bend without moving our back too much and using a more hip dominant movement. - The hip hinge is a fundamental mo...vement in daily life from lifting to sitting to tying a lace. And even more important in sports from scrummaging in rugby, being strong whilst weightlifting to name only a few. - These progressions help you first understand the movement and over time progress the movement and add weight to that movement. - The main point with all these movements is loading the hips and keeping the spine straight. It takes a while to get used to but persevere and the penny will drop. - Any questions, ask away in the comments or send a direct message. - ⚠ As always move within your limits, progress over time when confident and strong enough. - If you are suffering in pain ensure you receive professional advice for what suits you and your pain as these pictures do not replace professional assessment and advice.

Continuing our exercise posts we move on to the shoulders. When was the last time you put some real weight or force through your hands, arms, or shoulders? You don’t have to throw weights around to have strong shoulders. Simply getting on all 4s and putting some weight through your upper limbs is a great strategy to build strength not only in your shoulders, but your back, core, and wrists. As children moving around on our hands and knees was a doddle, you ask most adults and... there’s some complaint of soreness or difficulty getting up and down. I often advise patients with young children to follow their children playing and see how tiring it is for them and they soon begin to understand how difficult being on all 4s is. - Give it a try, comment down below how easy or difficult you find it, or post a picture of you getting as many of your friends and family on the floor and loading your upper limbs over the weekend! - It is not necessarily whether or not you can or can’t do the movements above but more the principles of introducing simpler smaller movement to allow you to understand what can and can’t be done whilst in pain and using this principle for all of your pains. - ⚠ Remember only move within your limits, you may not be able to complete all variations but start by hold the position and when you feel strong and confident enough progress to some of the variations in the pictures. - If you are suffering in pain ensure you receive professional advice for what suits you and your pain as this video does not replace a professional assessment and advice.

Here are our step by step exercises you can do at home to combat your back pain. - These movements may not be pain free but will help you understand what your body can currently withstand. Introducing these movements bit by bit and slowly increasing how much you move or how many times you do it will demand adaption from the body, similar to how stretching often enough changes your mobility. - It is not necessarily whether or not you can or can’t do the movements in the pictu...res but more the principles of introducing simpler smaller movement to allow you to understand what can and can’t be done whilst in pain and using this principle for all of your pains. - ⚠ Remember only move within your limits, you may not be able to complete the whole movement but beginning with a smaller amount of movement and increasing it over time you will begin to progress. - If you are suffering in pain ensure you receive professional advice for what suits you and your pain as these pictures do not replace a professional assessment and advice.

User

At Arwel Roberts Osteopathy we begin each new patient relationship with a relaxed consultation.
This will allow us to properly understand your concerns, and will be the first step of your rehabilitation process.
If you have any long term pains or injuries then get in touch today to arrange your first friendly consultation.

User

Each and every individual is different but we all use very similar movements from day to day, from sitting (squatting), to bending and many more.
These can often be effected when in pain and to regain full movement it often requires a regression of movement to allow the body to progress and become comfortable moving again.
That’s why in the coming weeks we aim to bring you simple videos to help you understand how to break down and build up movements.

Sports, and especially contact sports are one of the leading causes of pains and injuries.
Osteopathic treatment can be an excellent form of sports rehabilitation. As unlike other therapists we approach things differently, we treat the physical injury, provide our patients with pain management techniques as well as physical rehabilitative exercises. These are put in place in order to prevent any future injuries, which will allow you to spend more time training rather than working on your rehab.

User

Your first visit with us will all be about trying to identify and understand the source of your pain and discomfort.
You will then be told about your rehabilitation plan so that you know how long it will take, what to expect and to reassure you about how you can manage and relieve your pain so that your recovery can begin immediately.
We also now offer discounts for NHS staff, emergency services and armed forces personnel. 👮‍♂️💂‍♂️👨‍🚒
