Ascension Church Southampton

About Ascension Church Southampton

Ascension is a lively Anglican church in Bitterne Park. We're currently meeting online due to Covid-19, get in touch to find out how.

Ascension Church Southampton Description

Join us for our services: Sun 9am Traditional holy communion with hymns, Sun 10: 30am Informal service of worship and teaching with children's activities or Wed 9: 30am Communion.

Jesus had a simple yet brilliant plan for his Church; that it was to be a place of worship and a place of mission. We seek to join in with Jesus’ plan for his church locally in our community. We seek to ‘know Jesus and make him known’.

Knowing Jesus…

As a community we seek to prioritize the worship of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Everything we do follows from our relationship with Him. Without him we can do nothing. So we seek to grow in our love of God, both individually and as a community. We commit to seeking the presence of God, we prioritise prayer, and we expect God to act in our world and speak to us.

But as we encounter Jesus, we know that again and again he calls us out into our community.

… and making him known

We believe that our identity as part of God’s worldwide church is be a missionary community, a community that is completely committed to joining with God in transforming, reconciling and restoring his world. God is a missionary God and he is already at work in our communities. We seek to join him in this work. We strive to be a community that passionately, confidently and courageously shares our faith. We seek to be a community that transforms our world.

What does this mean in practice?

At the moment we are running Windows Café, opening our buildings for community use and going into local schools. We value prayer healing ministry and run ‘Healing Space’ at The Church of the Ascension each Wednesday morning, and support initiatives such as ‘Healing on the Streets’ [HOTS] at the Bitterne Triangle on a Saturday morning.

We’re working with Christians in Townhill to run family events in the Townhill Community Centre.

We participate with other local churches in a range of other activities at Christmas, Easter and other occasions

Praying for the city this morning from our corner. His mercies are new every morning.

Let Jesus calm the storms of our lives: storms will come, it’s just a fact, the key is to ask Jesus in.
This was Andy, Ruth, and Peters message for Uganda, let’s hold that in our prayers this week.

🎉 Baptisms 🎉
Today we had the absolute joy of celebrating Rosie’s baptism! A truly beautiful occasion as we join as whole church family to share in her public declaration of a faith held so dear!

Today marks 25 years since women were first ordained in the Church of England! A day very much worth celebrating 🎉🎉🎉
Our own wonderful Nicky is someone who is following Jesus’ call on her life to be ordained and to serve him with everything she’s got.
“For me, the joy of what I do is sharing Jesus and his Gospel; this is what I love and what I am privileged to be able to do in so many settings. In Jesus is life and life in abundance and my heart is that more and more people ...would come to know and experience this for themselves”
A strong, courageous woman, steadfast in faith, passionate about Jesus and a blessing to us all.

For a bit of reading this lent we would love to recommend to you John Mark Comer’s book, Garden City!
Two of the biggest questions we find ourselves asking are ‘who am I’ and ‘what is my purpose’. In his book John Mark explores these and provides a fresh take on our calling as Christians and our purpose in life!
... A fantastic book, and well worth the investment!
Hope you like it!

Happy International Women’s Day!!
Here in Uganda, it’s a bank holiday. Both Uganda and the UK have a long way to go to achieve gender equality, but it’s been great to see development in both contexts.
We met Lydia, Christine (11) and Eunice (1) at Rev Richard Rukundo’s Children’s work training. They’re here alongside a majority male group, and it’s really encouraging that they’re here.
... Let’s move towards gender equality 👊

We’ve spent the last few days with Rev. Richard Rukundo and his team. A day off together yesterday saw us exploring Sipi falls (2000m above sea level!). Today and tomorrow we’re spending time at a conference run by Richard in Bukedi Diocese, about the importance of children in the church and in God’s Kingdom.
Please pray for us we share and learn at the conference.

// Sunday morning in St. Andrew's Church, Naminage //
Peter preached an all age service - an unfamiliar but very well received format! Revd. Sosan acted Jesus, with Sandra and Alex as disciples, to dramatise the story of Jesus calming the storm.
// Whatever our storm is, Jesus is on our boat with us //
... It was wonderful to see the church full of people of all ages!

Our church partnership with Naminage is growing and forming.
Ruth and Sandra led children's work training, and it was great to learn from people at St. Andrew's Church about how they are engaging children too.
We've learnt from each other, and we've seen more and more of how big our God is, because of our different perspectives of Him.

Andy preached to over 1000 people in Jinja cathedral, before returning to Naminage for the morning service.
Here’s a flavour of the cathedral worship!

The view from St Andrew’s church this morning... a hazy Ugandan sky in the midst of the wet season, although we haven’t witnessed any rain ourselves yet! Peter, Alex and Jo visited before breakfast, but after Alex’s training run for the half-marathon! He had a few laughs from passers-by.
Today, visits to the Petal project’s location and to local schools for assemblies are happening... more photos to follow.

After many hours of travel, the team has arrived safely in our link parish, Naminage.
Plans are being made for the next few days, including children’s worker training, some school assemblies and meetings about Petal, the reusable sanitary towel micro-enterprise.
Do stay tuned for updates!

This morning we prayed for Andy, Hannah, Joanna, Alex, Ruth, Sandra and Peter as they travel to visit our link church - St Andrew’s Church in Naminage, Uganda.
Do pray for them each day over the next 3 weeks - they’ll be returning with stories to tell of our church family in Naminage, and how God is working in their community.
Keep checking social media for updates on their adventures 🇺🇬

As we encounter Jesus he calls us out of our brokenness to new life in him, now and for eternity
