Creatures of habit? Or just coincidence? I caught these two Ashmead commons as a brace, over two nights five years ago.
They were both landed last week at over thirty pounds and were the only two fish caught. Neither carp is caught more than once a year normally.
Is it something in their diet that prompts them to feed on bait in the spring? Is it that their metabolism means they are more active than other fish at this time and more willing to feed? Or is it just coinciden...ce?
These patterns and little mysteries help to make carp angling the fascinating pastime I love.

I don't normally share fundraising requests on social media but this is an exception; a request from a fishing friend of mine, who has family in need of a little help...

A great morning! It's been Trev Sturgess' winter for certain and some thoughtful angling and a bit of persistence has paid off... I can't remember the last time a carp angler cast a single grain of sweetcorn into Ashmead! Well done Trev!! Jill's at 31.10.

A bit of encouragement for our first guests who will be arriving soon... Spring can be a fantastic time to fish Ashmead.

After an autumn spent restoring the most iconic of carp pools, I've now got a lot of management to catch up on on my own wetland!

On his days off from Hogwarts, Albus liked to take Minerva and her owl carp fishing....

A lovely start to the winter syndicate, landed this morning after my first overnight visit to the wetland. Thirty-five pounds exactly.

Fish Ashmead with Chris Yates and Terry Hearn in September 2019!
The Ashmead Charity Auction in support of Ebonie’s Journey
We've been following the story of an incredibly brave young lady and her family for a long time. Ebonie-Rose has been very ill for a long time too, having been diagnosed with Ph+ALL in February 2016. This rare type of leukaemia that affects only 5% of children has dominated her life ever since.
... Ebonie has been supported by her wonderful family through all of the ups and downs of her battle with her illness, which has included a bone marrow transplant from a young family donor. Keith Jenkins, who is a good friend of mine and a well-known carp angler, is Ebonie's Grandad.
Right now, Ebonie needs funding to support her through a course of pioneering treatment and at Ashmead we want to do what we can to support her.
We have decided to auction an exclusive forty-eight hour session at Ashmead (1pm on 4th September to 12pm on 6th September 2019) for three individual anglers, with catering provided.
A visit to Ashmead, where some of the finest carp in the country are to be found cruising through the channels of a wild and beautiful wetland, is a rare and special event in itself but we wanted to make this opportunity unique.
We have been blessed with the support of two good friends of ours, Chris Yates and Terry Hearn, who will fish alongside the winning anglers. So, if you want to fish and swap tales with two former British Carp Record holders, at one of the country’s finest carp waters, this is your chance.
Keith Jenkins and myself will also be there and we will make this two night session one you will remember for a lifetime. There will be tea, hobbies, fifty pound mirrors, tea, European Cranes, forty pound commons, tea and cake, endless stories, cane rods, Kelly Kettles, watervoles and tea… Lots of tea.
The auction will end at 5pm on 31st October 2018 and the highest three bids posted as comments on this announcement on the Ashmead Facebook page will win the fishing. So if you want to place a bid please post it as a comment on the Ashmead Facebook page under this post announcing the auction.
You could save and change a young girl's life, so please do what you can. Yes, if you look back through her story, Ebonie's journey has been heart-breaking but it is equally inspirational. Her bravery needs your support. Please try and give her journey a happy ending.
