We held our wedding at Askham Hall this weekend just gone (28/10/17), and phenomenal doesn't even come close to covering it - everything was sheer perfection. Anybody considering it as a venue, just book it now, before somebody beats you to it.

The venue itself is breathtakingly beautiful, each bedroom unique, stunning tiled floors, grounds that look perfect in any season. The Bank Barn requires almost no decoration, the Medieval Barn is the perfect setting for an intimate ceremony and the lounge and study are cosy and comfortable.

The food was wonderful - the team went out of their way to accommodate bespoke choices for us and executed everything to perfection. Evening pizzas were well-timed and delicious.

What made everything so amazing, though, was undeniably the team. Vicki, the wedding coordinator, was everywhere at once, making sure that everything went perfectly for us, nothing too much trouble. Nico, house manager and sommelier, ran everything seamlessly, and was utterly charming.

Our guests were full of complements for Askham Hall - the decor, the food, the staff, and almost everybody asked how we had found such a wonderful place. The truth is, we stumbled upon it, and we're so, so glad that we did.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the best day of our lives

I got a reasonable deal but was disappointed by the contrast between the grandness of the main building and the quality of my room.

The room was tired, the bathroom very old and the bed mediocre at best. The TV was from another century and to top it off Tetley tea as I recall. You'd expect Twinnings at the very least!

I was only in the barn room used for weddings & parties etc. Bar situated at one end up some steps. Really large room, brilliant for weddings, christenings & parties. The fairy lights hanging from the ceiling made it look really magical. The surroundings outside were well kept, clean & tidy and there was ample parking.

Lovely. Like one of those places that I considered not reviewing because I don't want other people to know about it lovely. I came here just before my birthday after a walk to Lowther Castle with my son. My phone battery was dead and I was tired so we decided to stay overnight. The manager, I believe his name was Nico, offered to call me a cab back to Penrith even before I was a guest. When we decided to stay he was so hospitable and made me feel welcome. He told me that I missed dinner but that he could bring us a snack, and I ordered a plate of charcutterie and Nico and another staff member brought it up to my room and endearingly remained polite while they assembled an awkward travel cot for my son. It was a wonderful escape from daily life and this hotel in a little village by the river felt like a fairy tale. We will definitely be coming back but more prepared and ready for dinner. I was also really pleased to see that in the larder they had wine from a vineyard I toured in Chile. I would have given this hotel five stars had it not been for the morning staff. The woman hosting breakfast made me feel self conscious about having a noisy child and reminded me that they had other guests, and when I asked the woman at the desk to call me a cab in the morning she told me I had to call them myself, gave me the landline phone and let me struggle with the chord and dial the number while I had the strap of my son's harness in the other hand. Then she stepped out behind my desk, over my son, and left me to it. Other than that it was a fabulous experience. Looking forward to returning.
