This cancer (like the vast majority of them) presents later in life and in General Practice we tend to say that bloating or abdominal symptoms that mimic IBS in women above 45 should warrant a very quick blood test that is a marker for ovarian cancer. This blood test is called ca125 and it is specifically for ovarian cancer. . . Ovarian cancer has very non specific symptoms and so it's difficult to pick up. With continued health awareness and promotion in addition to media led campaigns such as those by the #nhs or ovarian.org or even #targetovariancancer are fantastic and some real groundbreaking research is currently underway. . . These include #dryjanuary and #gosoberforoctober which is not to be confused (as we have done!!) with #stoptober which is smoking cessation encouragement! . . However, in our video we talk about what #harmful drinking is and also where to seek advice for this, should you feel you drink to harmful levels or if you know anyone that does. Often, admitting there is a problem is the hardest step. And there are lots of amazing charities around that will engage with you once there has been a certain period of sobreity. (for example #helpinghandsessex is an amazing charity that is based in #essex. These guys are awesome because they engage when there has been around 4 days of sobreity ) . . . .
