In 1943, the US army opened the Assault Training Center to train troops the tactics needed for a beach invasion (Normandy). In six short months over 10, 000 troops trained at the ATC.

"W.L.TRUMP May 21 44" and "A.G.STEWART July 9 44" ! Turns out to be ...... William Luther TRUMP Bn 24 May 1921 Dd 31 Dec 1993 Bd Page cemetery, Stewart County, Tennessee.... Staff Sergeant U.S. Army – 34494814 – enlisted Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia 21 Nov 1942 – single – grammar school. Height 69 inches; weight 188 pounds Released from military 17 Oct 1945 Feb 1946 Married Birdie Leona PAGE – 5 children – wife died 1953 Guessing he was a non-combatant, if he was then he would be in a sausage camp by this date. Further guessing a supervisor at the huge storage complex of warehouses at Mortehoe railway station.
Archibald Gordon STEWART Bn 31 March 1906 – Father from Scotland Dd 16 July 1981 Bd Winn Field, Winn, Louisiana Corporal U.S. Army – 38652309 – enlisted Camp Beauregard, Louisiana 17 March 1944 – single – 4 years high school Married – 2 children Guessing by carving date and his age he was also at the Mortehoe Station complex.

There is a slight admin change that you should be aware of. The title “Devon D-Day” for 2019 now covers every event commemorating D-Day taking place in North Devon from mid-May onwards. This includes “Saunton D-Day” on Saunton beach on 15th and 16th June, which promises to be bigger and better than last year ! Details of all events will soon be posted on Devon D-Day’s Facebook page.
