About Atherton Cricket Club

Atherton Cricket Club formed in 1872 before being renamed to Howe Bridge Cricket Club in the early nineteen hundreds. A joint sporting venture with Atherton Colleries Football Club led the rebranding to Atherton Collieries CC before finally returning to the original name of Atherton Cricket Club in the 1960's. From its origins the club only played friendly matches until joining the South Lancashire League in 1920 but a year later joined the Bolton Association. The first professional was employed in 1921, Mr Harry Tyldesley of Lancashire. Atherton CC have a proud history of long-serving players in the Bolton and District Cricket Association, developing youth through the club, including former Lancashire batsman Karl Brown. In addition to local talent the club is also able to attract promising and established overseas talent which further supports the development and progression. As with its players, Atherton CC boasts long serving committee members dedicated to bringing success to the club and developing youth, none more so than John Charslon who has just completed his 60th year as club secretary. This is in addition to many other roles servicing as Lancashire Under 11's manager for 21 years and chairman of the Bolton & District Cricket Association. Former Chairman and current committee member, Philip Tomlinson, is also closing in on 50 years at the club. The 2013 season saw the club achieve unrivalled success in all on and off the field activities. The Under 15's winning the league cup (final played 2014 due to weather), the second XI winning the Isherwood cup, and the first XI winning a historic league and Cross cup double were the undoubted highlights of recent seasons.
