Atlantic Dagger

About Atlantic Dagger

Our route from Gran Canaria to Barbados, 3000 miles of open ocean hopefully taking us 40-50 days to complete. This is a common route for ocean rowers and sailors, this is due to the strongest presence of the North Atlantic Trade Winds. These winds are steady East to Wast prevailing winds driven by convection towards the North Pole and colder temperatures, the rotation of the Earth deviates these winds clockwise around the North Atlantic. Another result of these winds are strong East to West currents in the Ocean. With a land based support team giving us regular satphone updates we should be able to steer ourselves into the most favourable winds and currents in order to make the best headway. Historically these winds and currents were used by colonial sailors who would pick up slaves, gold and ivory from the west coast of Africa and make best speed to the Carribean islands. They would then trade the slaves and goods for sugar, sail up the east coast of America still with the trade winds, pick up more American commodities such as furs, textiles and leather and catch the trade winds back across from Canada to Europe.
