It was really great to meet up with former pupil Baran Yardimci this week, from Eden Park Primary School. In terms of 11+ success, I’ve maintained a 100% success rate with pupils I have tutored from this particular school over the past five years or so. Eden Park, to my knowledge, has long been a high achieving school for those pupils who struggle a little with general learning. Today, it is clear from my 1:1 involvement with individual pupils that that success has been ext...ended throughout.
Eden Park benefits from the support, collaboration and savings that result from being part of the Coast Academies multi-academy trust.
So, a big shout out, especially, for the current team of great Maths teachers towards the top end of the school.
Also, for this week, a big thank you to Baran’s Mum, Abi, for making our little get together happen in Brixham. It meant a great deal and was such great fun! Simon

It’s three yeses! Congratulations to my star pupil, Solly, from Eden Park, who recently moved into the area and took a crash course in studies and Mock exams with me. He took the 11+ Exam and has received the all important guidance letter from our selective schools indicating TOTAL success in the actual exam. A fantastic triumph. One of our biggest success stories to date, given the limited time we had. Application can now be made to any one of our three selective schools for boys.

In most cases, the 11+ selection tests take place in mid September but in certain circumstances, such as if you have just moved into the area, a reserve day comes into effect. So, It’s Exam Day tomorrow for Eden Park’s Solly Day-Stokoe and practice to help Solly do his best on the day has been taking place. Tests are just one part of school life and doing their best is what matters.

Today we held a Practice Test Paper for the 11+ - one that was all about getting started and introducing pupils to test style questions at an easier level; essentially having a go! Mock exams are always invaluable practise working under exam conditions and getting to grips with the exam style and format, the all important audio instructions and the answer grid. We simulate the exam to create realistic exam conditions. Then, we have some downtime and some fun. Representing Galmpton - Archer; Brixham C of E - Evie; Eden Park - Solly.

I was pleased to attend a brief meeting yesterday at The Burton Academy, Torquay. Arrangements have been put in place for me to begin providing 1:1 tutoring from tomorrow onwards for a particular pupil, where a great relationship has developed at his foster home over recent weeks. Learning has become fun again for him, as we focus on Functional Maths and English Skills. The Burton Academy is part of The Catch 22 Multi Academies Trust and is an alternative education provider f...or learners aged 11 to 16-years-old and whose needs cannot be met within a mainstream environment. In particular, the Academy provides placements for young people in the Torbay area who exhibit social, emotional and behavioural concerns. I’m looking forward to developing 1:1 learning in this environment and progressing my 15 year old pupil to the next positive stage in his development.

Congratulations to Archer, who is on our 11+ journey and has, this week, recorded a record score of 92% on his English Comprehension Paper. It is never a case of just reading the text and answering questions on it. Some of the question types can be tricky to solve for the full amount of marks. The key areas are spotting information; inference and deduction; and having a good vocabulary is important in order to understand what words mean as they are used in the text. Well done, Archer. Great job!

So, the clocks go back tonight as British Summer Time comes to an end at 2am. We all get an extra hour in bed on Sunday morning after the clocks change. The change always happens on the last Sunday of October and it will mean the nation gets a longer lie-in but it also means our days will be getting shorter and our nights longer and colder.
Why do the clocks go forward?
Changing the clocks an hour began more than 100 years ago, when parliament passed the Summer Time Act in 19...16, thereby creating British Summer Time. It was the result of a campaign started in 1907 by William Willett to stop people wasting valuable hours of light in the summer months and to save fuel during the war.
Germany was the first country to adopt the clock-changing plan in April that year and the UK followed in May.
While Daylight Savings Time is observed in most places in Europe, North America and Australasia, most places in Africa and Asia don't.
When will the clocks go forward again?
The clocks go forward again on Sunday, March 31 next year.

Waiting for the post? The Local Authority is about to advise which school your child has been allocated, following this year’s 11+ exam. The guidance letter coming, will suggest whether an application to a selective school is recommended. This letter won’t provide details of the scores, or provide a ranking, but simply indicates whether your child is likely to receive a place at a selective school. It is not an offer of a place, and it cannot guarantee a place, because applications haven’t been made at that stage so the numbers requesting admission to a particular school aren’t known.

Evie from Brixham C of E received her 'Pen Licence' at school this week and we are ALL so proud. I'm chuffed to bits having only gone and predicted it last Saturday. Well done, Evie, who is also well and truly on our 11+ journey here.

Only 1 session and half a dozen mock tests as I left it too late. What an amazing tutor, taxiing children around. Opening his home to get children through. My son got into all 3 grammar schools. Simon is a great tutor and couldn't be happier, would highly recommend.

User

My son got so much out of working with Simon. He loved the challenges Simon set him, which were perfectly targeted for his age and ability level, and delighted in the learning Simon offered. His levels of understanding of the 11+ definitely improved within a short timeframe but more than this, my son gained in confidence, social skills, empathy and motivation. Money well spent and my son now has the most amazing memories at a crucial time in his development. Highly recommended.

User

I would highly recommend Simon, his attitude is second to none and he can't do enough for you.

User

We couldn't be happier, looking forward to the continuing support and learning. It's amazing watching her grow with her learning week by week. Thank you Simon
