About Austrian Alpine Club (Uk)

A club for alpine mountaineers, moutain bikers, walkers and snowsport enthusiasts

Austrian Alpine Club (Uk) Description

The Austrian Alpine Association (Oesterreichischer Alpenverein - ÖAV) is a large and long established mountain club, with much more to offer than most people realise when they contact the office. The club as a whole has a long history, with the ÖAV founded in Vienna in 1862 it has developed into an important organisation, with over 500, 000 members in total across the 200 sections. The Austrian Alpine Club (UK), also known as Sektion Britannia by the ÖAV, is a section of the ÖAV which is based in Innsbruck. Sektion Britannia was formed in 1948 and is one of the largest mountaineering clubs in the UK with over 16, 000 UK and overseas members.

As an alpine club the aim is to encourage the growth of mountaineering and to support the life and culture of mountain people. It promotes and facilitates mountain activities, these range from mountain climbing, ski-touring, klettersteig, mountain biking, mountain walking and many sports in which training is provided. The club provides a wealth of information and access to training programmes, guides, produce merchandise of maps and books and run mountain huts maintaining the footpath and mountains routes.

We hope that as a member you will benefit from the membership that you receive and continue to work together in widening the knowledge and advantages of being part of the Austrian Alpine Club UK section. Working together to preserve the original state and beauty of the alps, so it is there for all to enjoy.

Last summer, AAC(UK) member Stephen Dagley trekked through the Alps and Dolomites for the first time, visiting from the US. He has shared his Photo Expedition Journal with us. With it being the time to start planning your own hut to hut tours, perhaps this will be some inspiration! Thanks to Stephen for sharing with us.

Joining the alpine club is key if you are doing any hiking in the alps, and the UK chapter makes it so much easier for English-speaking travelers to join, understand the benefits, and learn about the trail and huts system. Plus you get a cool card, map, and newsletters delivered by Royal Air Mail. As a hiker from the US this was very helpful!

I joined the Austrian Alpine Club when I got into climbing, but it has opened up so many opportunities for me. It is such a great community with a huge wealth of knowledge and wonderfully interesting people. I’ve been on a club Klettersteig course near Innsbruck which was excellent, and I recently tried mountainbiking at the AGM. The perks of the club are fantastic (insurance, grants, hut discounts etc) but the best thing are the people and the huge bank of knowledge to tap into. I also love the Austrian recipes in the magazine!
