It's the Piccadilly Summer Fair today. For the first time in a few years, I won't be there with any of our goodies, but I'll be having a look round and helping out in the Autism Group cabin at the end of the sensory pathway.

We've already started getting orders for teacher gifts, so here's a few ideas

my job yesterday (as well as more leavers hoodies) was to transfer a server. It's a complex crm system and website I first built for a customer about 12 years ago. It still works perfectly but the server it lives on was pretty outdated. The hosting company he uses had quoted him £60 an hour to move everything (including time just sat watching 1.2 million image files transfer) but they wouldn't make sure everything was working post-transfer.
Ace Computers have come to the res...cue, in-house VPS with a custom server configuration that we have full control over. I installed the basic services via command line (a control panel would cause problems with the custom setup), and set the transfer to complete overnight (the £60 an hour bit). Just a couple of loose ends to tie up, and it's good to go for another 12 years (regular maintenance aside).
The customer has saved a significant amount with both the transfer (I don't charge for time spent sleeping) and the server costs going forwards.
