About Autistic On Wheels

Autistic advocacy and autistic-rights activist /campaigner. Female British autistic blogger writing about all manner of autism-related matters.

Autistic On Wheels Description

Updates of entries on the Autistic On Wheels blog, and posts promoting autism acceptance, autistic rights and autistic advocacy. Also some matters related to fibromyalgia, ME /CFS and wheelchair life.

Identity-first language ("is autistic") is the norm here and is encouraged. If you wish to use person-first language ("have autism" /"person with autism") in relation to yourself that will be respected in relation to you, but this is an identity-first language page.

This page is pro-vaccination (I am aware that some people cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons and that is perfectly fine - these are the people for whom we maintain herd immunity). Vaccines do not cause autism. If you come on here and post anti-vaccination things, you will be removed and banned. Ditto for autism "cures".

This page does *not* light it up blue for autism awareness because I boycott LIUB and Autism Speaks. I promote autism *acceptance*. This is a RedInstead and Light It Up Gold supporter.

No personal attacks, please, either on me or anyone else.

At the moment this page is a work in progress so things will be added /tweaked /etc as I finalise things (and also work how to do them! )

Autism is a complex spectrum, so while I welcome different people's input, experiences, etc, the invalidation and belittling of others' autistic experiences (such as "I don't experience it that way so you're lying /not really autistic /etc", you're Not Like My Child) is not acceptable. Just because I speak (most of the time) does not make me any less legitimately autistic than a nonspeaking autistic.

We are autism-positive here! (I say "we"; it's just me! )

Perfectly explained.

For UK people.
There's a massive lack of Changing Places toilets and that NEEDS addressing. I'm a manual wheelchair user and very independent so I'm OK with standard accessible toilets but many people aren't and they shouldn't be prevented from going to places just because of a lack of accessible toilet facilities. Where possible, Changing Places toilets NEED to be considered standard.

ALL OF THIS!

I'll be at the festival with the Dimensions for Autism group. If you're in the area, do pop down!
Don't ask me about specific times, though - I've had a long, hectic week and I'm pretty knackered, so I'll get there when my body is up for it. Aiming for late morning, but no guarantees.

I'm afraid I can't attend but I'm sharing this here in case anyone can and wants to go. I hope it's a great day!
I don't think I'll be doing one round my way this year, due to life getting in the way.

You parent *an autistic child*, not *autism* as a whole.

Fantastic news!

If you are still in doubt as to whether or not ABA is intrinsically, inherently and irreparably abusive, look no further.
THIS is what the ABA governing people support. Electric shocks to train autistic people (and other disabled people) into absolute, terrified compliance.

My friend's article, the amazing lass behind Do I look autistic yet?

"When you call autism a behavioral disorder—and I am not touching the "disorder" part right here but I also do not accept it—you are focusing only on the part of the person that you can see, as filtered through your own neurocultural understanding. You are denying that there is something deeper."

' "In essence, what we are demonstrating for the first time is that autistic people's social behaviour includes effective communication and effective social interaction, in direct contradiction of the diagnostic criteria for autism. We have, for the first time, uncovered empirical evidence that there is a form of social intelligence that is specific to autistic people." (INSAR 2019)
'In other words, different social skills, not broken ones. We have our own social signalling and can co-operate and interact effectively....with each other. Likewise, non-autistic people can generally co-operate and interact effectively...with each other. But put one of each group together, and they both tend to misunderstand one another.''
