It's #TipTuesday everyone! This week's #Autodocta concerns a 2010 Volkswagen Passat CC with a cracking noise coming from the load area when driving over uneven surfaces...
Question: We are having difficulty finding the source of a cracking noise from the load area of a 2010 Volkswagen Passat CC when driving over uneven surfaces. We have heard the cracking noise on road test but have been struggling to find the cause of the fault. It sounds like the cracking noise is coming fr...om the bodywork but we cannot be sure.
Answer: We have been made aware of this type of fault on Passat CC models up to VIN WVWZZZ3CZBE712251. The noise is due to excessive friction in the bodywork joints in the load area. Remove RH and LH load area side trim panels. Locate bodywork joint below parcel shelf. Using a suitable tool, increase the clearance between the body panels Fig.1.1 & Fig.1.2. Apply body protection wax, available from Volkswagen parts department, to bodywork joint. Repeat procedure for opposite side. Carry out road test to confirm the cracking noise has been eliminated.

It's #TipTuesday! This week's #Autodocta is regarding a 2015 Mercedes-Benz SLK with excessive engine noise...
Question: We serviced a 2015 Mercedes-Benz SLK 200 and recently replaced the auxiliary drive belt as the cause of excessive noise from the front of the engine. The vehicle was OK for a while, but has now returned to the workshop with the same fault. Are you aware of any other possible causes before we replace the auxiliary drive belt again?
... Answer: We are aware of a fault on the 2,0 petrol engine with a mechanical engine coolant pump fitted to the SLK model. The fault is due to a misalignment of the alternator causing premature wear of the auxiliary drive belt. Remove the auxiliary drive belt and the alternator. Push the alternator spacer sleeve to the fully rearward position. Refit alternator, ensure the mounting bolts are only hand tight. Tighten the mounting bolts alternately in the following stages Fig.1.1 & Fig.1.2. Stage 1: 8 Nm. Stage 2: 20 Nm. Fit a new auxiliary drive belt. Start engine and confirm noise has been rectified.

It's #TipTuesday everyone! This week's #Autodocta concerns a 2014 Seat Leon ST with an engine coolant temperature (ECT) gauge at full hot and a warning light displayed in the instrument panel.
Question: We are experiencing a problem with a 2014 Seat Leon ST 1,6 TDI. The engine coolant temperature (ECT) gauge goes to full hot and a warning message requesting the driver to switch the engine off is displayed in the instrument panel. We have carried out a pressure test on the coo...ling system, but no leaks where found. We have also checked for internal engine coolant loss from the cylinder head gasket, but no leaks where found. Do you have any ideas?
Answer: Yes, this has been reported to us before and it affects Leon ST models with CXXA/CXXB engine codes. The fault is due to a failure of the engine coolant pump impeller control actuator. Remove the engine coolant pump. Check if the engine coolant pump impeller control actuator is stuck in the closed position Fig.1. Fit a new engine coolant pump. This should rectify the fault.

It's #TipTuesday! Today's #Autodocta relates to a 2014 Ford Kuga with an overheating engine, lack of power and engine malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) flashing.
Question: A customer's 2014 1,6 petrol Ford Kuga is suffering with engine overheating, intermittent lack of power and the engine malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) flashes whilst driving. We have experienced the symptoms on road test but cannot source the cause of the fault in the workshop. Can you help?
... Answer: Yes, the symptoms you have described match a recent vehicle that we know has been fixed. The faults affect Kuga models with 1,6 turbocharged petrol engines up to 05/16. The cause is damage to the engine coolant expansion tank due to unsatisfactory location of the breather hose connector. Drain the cooling system. Remove and discard the coolant expansion tank breather hose Fig.1.1. Remove and discard coolant hose Fig.1.3. Fit new engine coolant expansion tank and expansion tank cap. Ensure the blanking plug, available from Ford parts department, is fitted to the engine coolant expansion tank breather hose connector Fig.1.2. Fit modified engine coolant expansion tank hose complete with breather hose Fig.1.3. Fill cooling system and bleed. Carry out road test to confirm faults are fixed.

Today's #TipTuesday #Autodocta relates to a 2011 Lexus CT with an illuminated engine malfunction indicator lamp and EGR system-related trouble codes stored.
Question: We have a 2011 Lexus CT in our workshop with the engine malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminated and several exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system related trouble codes stored in the engine control module fault memory. We have checked the EGR system and it seems to be working OK. Have you any ideas where to... start to fix this car?
Answer: We are aware of an EGR system related issue which affects Lexus CT models up to 20/07/12. The EGR valve wiring harness multi-plug is under tension which causes an intermittent open circuit and incorrect operation of the EGR valve, this leads to a build up of carbon deposits. Fit a modified EGR valve available from Lexus parts department. Remove insulation tape from wiring harness Fig.1.1. Re-route EGR valve wiring, leaving sufficient slack to allow for engine movement. Apply adhesive tape to area indicated Fig.1.2. To complete this repair the engine control module (ECM) will require reprogramming with upgraded software from the manufacturer.

It’s #TipTuesday! Today's #Autodocta relates to a 2010 Volvo V70 with an illuminated engine malfunction lamp and lack of power making a whistling noise on acceleration.
Question: We have a 2010 Volvo V70 2,0 Diesel in the workshop which is suffering with a lack of power and the engine malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminated. The customer also reported a whistling noise on acceleration. We cannot see any pipes that have blown off in the engine bay. Can you help?
... Answer: Yes, the fault you describe affects V70 models with 2,0 Diesel engine and it is due to the turbocharger (TC) intercooler outlet hose coming loose. Check the fitment and condition of the turbocharger (TC) intercooler outlet hose. If the outlet hose is loose, disconnect the hose and thoroughly clean the mating surfaces. Apply a 150 mm length of butyl tape to the turbocharger (TC) intercooler outlet as shown Fig.1.1. Refit the turbocharger (TC) intercooler outlet hose using new hose clamp. This should rectify the fault.
