Common Pilates Myths
•All Pilates is the same:- Classic Pilates:- Follows the Pilates principles exactly the way it was taught by Joseph, it always follows an exact set of exercises in an order that must be strictly followed. Modified Pilates:- It is a safe and effective way for people with injury to still exercise
... •Pilates is only for very fit people: - Pilates works well for beginners who want to build strength in their core muscles, improve posture as well as work on their balance and flexibility. Exercises can be adapted to address specific conditions.
•Pilates alone will help you lose weight: - Pilates doesn’t burn calories like running and swimming however it can incorporated into a weight loss program.
•Pilates is just an Ab workout: - It’s true Pilates does work on the core muscles but not only that it also aims to create a flexible and strong body.
•Pilates is easy:- Pilates is a challenging workout this is because it works by strengthening the smaller muscles as well as combining full body movements.

Yoga VS Pilates
When It comes to Yoga and Pilates some of us may ask “What’s the difference?, Which would work best for me?” So here are some points to consider when deciding what’s right for you….
•They are both low intensity low impact types of exercises Pilates focuses more on strength and ability whereas yoga focuses on flexibility.... •Pilates is effective for injury rehabilitation for example back problems whereas yoga uses the body to connect with the mind. •Pilates is considered a resistance exercise meaning it forces your skeletal muscles to contract. •Yoga focuses on stress relief and improving your body while Pilates increases your body awareness while encouraging you to improve your core strength.

Is the cold weather aggravating your muscles and causing you joint pain?
Below are a few steps you could take to help ease the issue...
1.Exercise- joint pain is often related to excess weight so by introducing an exercise program into your routine you will be helping to take the pressure off your joints and ease stiffness. Possible exercises include Pilates, walking and light jogging. Always exercise within appropriate ranges- speak to a healthcare specialist before engaging... in physical activity.
2.Ensure draughts in the house are sealed especially those who have a heightened sensory sensitivity as they are more susceptible to the effects of changes in temperature. It’s important to remember that not all draughts should be sealed.
3.Vitamin D is also important and is an essential vitamin that is frequently deficient among those with chronic pain, certain foods and supplements can also help for those with limited sun exposure e.g. sardines, mackerel & herring.
4.Good Posture- think about which positions puts the least amount of strain on your joints for example when reaching for a heavy object from a high cupboard it’s better to use a step or a ladder as this puts less strain on your shoulders.

Experiencing back pain?

The deep muscles of the spine and pelvis (the core muscles) don’t work well at controlling movement when you have lower back pain.
This control function does not automatically return when the symptoms of pain have resolved. However, if you specifically retrain these muscles there is evidence to show that this can positively influence your recovery, reduce pain and improve function.
... Have a go at this exercise from my Saturday Pilates class. It is challenging so only work in the range of movement where you can control your lower back position or if you feel like a slightly easier exercise click on the link below and have a look at the hundreds exercise in our vintage collection.
