A new 74-hectare urban park in Suzhou, China has been commissioned which transforms a decommissioned rollercoaster into a nature park and aviary.
Stainless steel mesh netting will be used to cover 160,000 sq ft of dilapidated amusement park, turning it into a new urban park to include the aviary.
The design proposal reuses the existing roller coaster structure, enclosing it with the stainless steel mesh that attaches to, and surrounds, the existing infrastructure.
... The main pathways inside the structure have been designed as an ‘infinity loop’ of elevated sections with viewing platforms, allowing visitors close access to the birds. The aviary will house around 20 species of indigenous birds plus an animal care facility.

Yorkshire Sculpture International begins next month on 22nd June.
This is the UK’s largest dedicated sculpture festival, comprising a series of exhibitions, events and learning programmes, with sculpture forms on display across four major galleries in the region – the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds Art Gallery, The Hepworth Wakefield and Yorkshire Sculpture Park as well as various locations outdoors in Leeds and Wakefield.
This first festival builds upon Yorkshire’s already ric...h history of pioneering sculptors, including Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore.
Continuing this timeline into the modern day is Damian Hirst. 7 of his major sculptures will be part of YSI. They will be displayed outdoors in Leeds city centre, at Leeds Art Gallery and at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park
The Turner Prize-winning artist, who grew up in Leeds, will show Hymn, Anatomy of an Angel and Black Sheep with Golden Horns in Leeds and Charity, Myth, The Hat Makes the Man and The Virgin Mother at Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

***DID YOU KNOW***
A team of scientists have converted a deserted school building in Sheffield into a soil-free farm.
The abandoned school in Tinsley has been fitted with a hydroponics system by Jacob Nickles from the new Institute for Sustainable Food at The University of Sheffield
... Using a system of pipes, nutrients and controlled growing environments the team have managed to grow anything from lettuce to tomatoes, all using a soil-free technique.
With 24 billion tons of fertile soil lost around the world to erosion every year there is an urgent need to develop specialist materials that biologically resemble soil.
It has also been confirmed that plants in this controlled setting grow up to ten times faster than they do in natural soil.
The farm will supply fruit and vegetables to the neighbourhood in Tinsley, as well as training for the local unemployed and an educational environment for schools.

**SOMETHING A BIT DIFFERENT**
It's nearly time for the The Great Knaresborough Bed Race
The annual event takes place this year on Saturday 8th June.
... The race is a mix of fancy dress and part gruelling time trial over a 2.4 mile course, ending with a swim through the icy waters of the River Nidd.
First staged in 1966, The Bed Race is an amazing spectacle and, as would be expected with it being held in Yorkshire, is a truly serious competitive effort!
Each year the race features 90 teams of six runners and a passenger. The teams gather at Knaresborough Castle on the morning of race day to be judged for the 'Best Dressed Team' award.
From 1 pm, led by the winning decorated team, the teams parade through the medieval streets of Knaresborough up to Conyngham Hall.
The course then winds its way down and around all sorts of steep banks, parkland, the scenic Waterside, Nidd Gorge and through Knaresborough itself. All finishing off with the notorious 20-yard swim across the fast-flowing Nidd.
The fastest teams do the course in around 14-minutes, sometimes quicker, and the slowest come in well under 30 minutes!

Ever wondered what the strange shaped sculpture was outside Weston Park Museum?
Originally commissioned and made for Sheffield Children's Hospital it was initially at the main entrance there before being moved to the Museum while work was carried out.
Created by sculptor William Pye, using stainless steel, it stands 14 ft high with a width of 6ft.
... William started his career as a sculptor working mainly in stainless steel and cast bronze, he creates work based around the natural laws of liquids and how they move.
His work can also be seen on the South Bank in London, Gatwick Airport North Terminal, Seville Expo and Mariinsky Concert Hall, St Petersburg.
He also has two vortex water sculptures in Oman and Brazil and a large water feature 'Vannpaviljong' in Drammen’s town centre in Norway.
Images show the sculpture in its original home in 1976, with William.
