To start us off on our count down we have chosen one of the largest animals in zoo - our Bactrian camels! These amazing animals are native to central Asia, and can be easily differentiated from their dromedary cousins as Bactrians have two humps (like a B on its side) and dromedaries only have on (just like a D on its side!)

Now open until 6pm from 21st July - 9th September!

We were so pleased that members of the Norfolk & Norwich Rover Owners Club and the Norwich Classic Vehicle Club were able to join us at this years’ Zoo Do as part of our 50th Birthday celebrations. Seeing these fantastic vehicles at the event really added to the feel of the evening taking us right back to 1968 when these cars were new and Banham Zoo first became a zoo.

What a fantastic surprise when we found this special 50th Birthday rock this morning. Norfolk really does rock! #norfolkrocks

It looks like it's the breeding season for our red breasted goose, It took a good keeper to spot this female goose hiding on a nest of six eggs. In the wild these geese often lay their eggs in nests close to birds of prey nests to drive predators away from their own eggs.

The European eagle owl is the largest owl with a wingspan of up to 2 metres. They often inhabit rocky landscapes and are also found in river valleys, open forest and grasslands in countries such as Croatia.
Obviously today we are backing England and wish them good luck in the semi final! ūü¶Āūü¶Āūü¶Ā

Some people often ask us why some of our African black foot penguins look so scruffy at this time of year. This is because each year they go through a moult which can last up to 22 days. Unlike other birds penguins lose most of their feathers at once and in the wild they wouldn’t be able to fish, as without their feathers they would not be waterproof if they went out to sea. To ensure they don’t starve they would eat around 30% more of their own body weight beforehand so that they have plenty of reserves to cope with being unable to catch any food.

We recently received a donation of fire hose from Haverhill Fire station which the keepers have used to create enrichment. The fire hose cubes certainly piqued the interest of 'Malachi' our dominant male gelada while the rest of the boys got coloured hoops filled with mushed up pellet to keep them busy

We are all excited for the game today and Yogi is flying the flag for his family, the Great Grey Owls who inhabit coniferous forests of northern countries such as Sweden.
Did you know that if our eyes were as big in proportion to our brain as the Great Grey Owls, they would be the size of a football? ‚öĹ
