About Barley Hall

Barley Hall is a stunning medieval house, once home to the Priors of Nostell and a Lord Mayor of York.

Barley Hall Description

Barley Hall is a stunning medieval house, once home to the Priors of Nostell and a Lord Mayor of York.

Until the 1980s the building was hidden under the relatively modern facade of a derelict office block. Only when it was going to be destroyed was the amazing medieval structure discovered and its rich history uncovered.

The building has now been lovingly restored to its original splendour with stunning high ceilings, beautiful exposed timber frames, and possibly the only horn window in England. It has been decorated to replicate what it would have looked like as the Snawsell home around 1483 and boasts a magnificent Great Hall. Visitors to Barley Hall can make themselves at home and sit on the chairs and handle the objects and experience what it would have been like to live in Medieval England.

Thomas de Dereford, Prior of Nostell from 1337 to 1372, is responsible for creating the building that today is known as Barley Hall. He arranged for the building of a hostel in York in 1360 for the Priors of Nostell who were prebendary canons and senior clerics at York Minster and as such were expected to attend ceremonies, services and business meetings in the city. As they were required to be present at the Minster so often it made sense for Prior Dereford to build a residence in York. http://ow.ly/aYBp30m8GrS

Investigations into Barley Hall's interior helped piece together the medieval layout of the building. It was clear that the building had been altered over time with floor levels changing and timbers moved around the building depending on the needs of the different occupants.

What a fantastic hidden gem this place is! We had the privilege to visit the hall during the opening weekend of the Magic and Mystery exhibition and had a great time there. Our children ages 5 and 2 were well entertained, the staff was very accommodating and welcoming. We enjoyed making magic wands and potions and watching the alchemist at work. Could have easily spent more than a couple of hours there if we wouldn’t have been in a hurry to get to our next appointment. Thank you everyone at Barley Hall!

I loved the barley hall experience because it was small and compact, clean and full of detail and staff was on hand if you needed to know anything and being down the alley added to the experience.

Had a lovely experiences today. Lovely relaxed atmosphere. Friendly, helpful staff. Best of all, it is a touch and feel museum. It was myself and my two boys, aged7 and 3. My 7 year old is very into history. The 3 year old.... Well, he's 3!! But thankfully I didn't need to worry he'd break anyrhing. Would definitely recommend. Small, but lots to see. A real eye opener.

A lovely time looking into our history plus the dressing up and the games you can play.

A hidden gem, lovely restored medieval town house which offers hands on experience. We went to the magic, religion and science exhibition which really got us thinking. My son commented that during medieval times people could be accused of witchcraft when in-fact they were doctors or medical scientists. I'd never really thought of it that way before.
