There is so much to get involved with at Barnett's Wood over the next year, starting with our Family Fun Day!
Come and join us for a range of games, activities and face painting. Learn all about the bugs that can be found at Barnett's Wood with Dr Ian Bevis on the Mini Beast Safaris (setting of at 11:30am and 2pm). Discover the world of archaeology and how it tells us all about the unseen history. There will be wildlife surveys throughout the day and information on how you ...can get involved with these on the regular! Let's not forget the free BBQ to top off this wonderful day of fun for the whole family and all ages!

Not a fan of football? Head over to Colebrook house (83 Colebrook Road) for a meeting with the Friends of Barnett's Wood. We will be meeting at kick off (7pm) and having a short discussion about the reserve and which direction the local people would like the reserve to go.
Oh and we will have free tea and biscuits...

Memorial Bench in Barnett's Wood
In January this year, we were joined by Neil Maxfield on a task day at Barnett’s Wood (centre of first picture) . We spent the day clearing a glade by the outdoor classroom and burning the resulting brash.
2 months later, we were sorry to hear that Neil had passed away in the time since we had met him. Before he passed, Neil told everyone how much he enjoyed working with us and was looking forward to volunteering again.
... With this in mind Chris and his family decided to do something in the memory of Neil and thought it would be fitting to install a bench at Barnett’s Wood with a plaque dedicated to him. Seeing as Neil was a practical man, with a love for crafting, Chris decided to build the bench himself, with the help of our volunteers, from the reserves coppiced chestnut.
So on Wednesday 25th May, Chris’ project was completed and the memorial bench now sits overlooking the glade Neil worked on. I think it’s safe to say that Neil would be over the moon with this bench and the work his son, and all of the other volunteers, put in to this project.
We would like to thank Chris for his help in making this project happen in the form of planning and the work on the day. We would also like to thank our volunteers that helped carry out Chris’ request so effectively and precisely. I think we can all agree the bench looks great!
Chris and his family would like me to pass on the following message:
“Thanks to everyone who expended a great deal of time and energy that day, it was truly a group effort and a testament to what can be achieved when a group of people combine towards a common goal. Also a special thanks to nick’s planning for the design, the wood and his energy on the day.”

Surely you have a better photos from BW than my gust dodging blackbird, albeit a beautiful bird...
Join in and let us know what other species we have on the reserve!

Woodpecker chick update... Since last Tuesday when I took the photos of the chick and parents at the nest, the chick seems to have fledged as there is no sight or sound of it this morning.
Feel free to message me with any of your own photos of Barnett's Wood you would like to see on this page!
