Teignbridge To Launch An Adverse Media Campaign Against Us
We have been advised from several helpful councillors that TDC are about to launch an expensive PR campaign against us in the media, apparently in retaliation for challenging them and gaining the public support we have gratefully received. The single aim is to discredit us and ruin our reputation by association or any other way they can. We are told they are hell bent on destroying our character and removing us from o...ur business. It seems that TDC do not like being challenged and will use any means available to sway public opinion. We sincerely hope TDC consider their position and refrain from further lowering ethical standards by personalising this battle and wasting even more tax-payers revenue. We have always offered and continue to offer TDC an open invitation to discuss matters, but they have always rejected it and have never given any reasons.
In the front page of last week’s Teignmouth Post, it mentioned the battle of Councilor Amanda Ford, who is thinking of quitting TDC due to the poisonous atmosphere, unpleasantness and bullying by TDC officers. She was fighting for openness and transparency and that TDC was in need of a massive shakeup stating “I am being gunned for, because I dare to challenge them”. Unfortunately, this sounds all too familiar to so many people.
Thank you to all the Beachcombers from The Beachcomber Team x

**UPDATE** Thank you all so much for the continued support and lovely messages you have sent us. We can report we have won a small victory in our David and Goliath battle with Teignbridge District Council (TDC). Late on Friday 28th September 2018 it was agreed that the Court grant us a Consent Injunction Order against TDC in our favour. TDC have now finally admitted that we are and continue to be a tenant. Early on Monday 3rd Oct, we asked TDC for keys to access the building....

A huge thank you to The Drifting Bear Co. for offering to design and distribute the poster below. We are so thankful and overwhelmed by local support and all the encouraging comments we have received, it certainly helps in our motivation to continue the fight. Please continue to sign and share the petition. Thank you from the Beachcomber Team. https://www.change.org/p/teignbridge-coun cil-save-the-beach…

Thank you so much for the love and support you have all shown. The lovely comments really mean so much to us.
The comments towards TDC are revealing of the thoughts and feelings of so many. We have not had any of the 46 TDC councillors or any of the 12 Teignmouth town councillors offer public support towards investigating matters. Would any like to step forward out of the shadows to show us all the reason you have been voted into office ? Are you closing ranks, is the potato too hot, are you hiding hoping that the situation will blow over, or, are you a proactive councillor that serves the people? We ask everyone to please keep sharing and signing the petition “Save The Beachcomber”.

Hello everyone
In response to the article that appeared in the Teignmouth Post Newspaper on 7th September 2018 it seems that part of our email we had sent to the managing director and all 46 Councillors in Teignbridge District Council (TDC), has been leaked to the Teignmouth Post by one or more of the councillors. We have been reluctant and unable to comment previously as due to the legal action we have taken against TDC we were advised not to. We truly hoped that common sens...

Hello.
In reply to so many messages of support and enquiries, we have held off from reporting any news whilst we were, and still are in discussions with the various parties; Teignbridge Council, Zurich insurance, Vericlaim (loss adjuster) and Quantum Survey & Project Management (appointed project managers).
Unfortunately it has been the most laborious, slow and painful months we have ever endured in business. We have requested numerous times that all parties move forward w...ith speed and efficiency and first requested back in August 2017 that any works Teignbridge Council had planned for the building were finalised whilst the asbestos was being removed therefore gaining precious time. The asbestos removal was due to be finished by the end of November until the contractors found more in the side panels, (unusual they didn’t find this before?), this was then removed which delayed the full removal until 24th December. This process could have been quicker if the contractors had put a larger team and worked a full 5 day week (or even dare say a Saturday?). We often work long hours when needs must.
At the moment we are unable to refit as we now enter the next phase of the cycle again not controlled by us, which is the reinstatement of walls, ceilings, toilets, electrics, plumbing etc. This will have to be submitted for quotes and then accepted.
What is controlled by us is the responsibility for the appliances and fit out, we have all our quotes in and are ready to go. All parties have agreed that May 2018 is the target date to fully re-open for business to serve customers with all works completed. Time will tell whether we will be handed the building back at the beginning of April ready for us to fit out, as we will need time to install and test all new equipment.
We are so frustrated with bureaucracy when all we want to do is re-open our little business enabling us to serve our customers, employ staff, purchase stock from local businesses, support local charities and therefore keeping our contribution to the local economy rolling.
In answer to the article in today’s Teignmouth Post titled “Will it, or wont it?” Our reply is as it always has been, YES WE WILL, the question we cannot answer is WHEN as this is being controlled by the other parties. We would like to be open as agreed with all parties by May 2018, but our experience from dealing with the bureaucracy and red tape suggests we have more chance in flying to the moon on a paper aeroplane. Let’s hope the powers that be who are in control prove us wrong. PLEASE
Thank you to all the Beachcombers from The Beachcomber Team (frustrated and disheartened but not beaten!)

Finally some news to report.
Yesterday we were informed that contractors will be on site on Tuesday 10th October to start the asbestos removal, 11 weeks to the day since the fire. We are starting to uncover a little more information about the holdup and quite frankly lethargic attitude which seems to lie between Zurich Insurance UK the buildings insurer, Vericlaim the appointed loss adjusters and Quantum Survey Management Ltd the appointed project managers. The lack of sp...eed and urgency, coupled with their complete lack of empathy towards our, and our staff’s situation is quite unbearable.
We have learnt that in the world of insurance claims the appointed project managers and loss adjusters take all the time in the world, just because they can, and being completely unaccountable no one can speed them up, they have nothing to lose, the contract is already in place. Little concern is given to staff, customers, suppliers or Teignmouth in general.
We haven’t been informed by Quantum Survey & Project Management how long the asbestos removal will take but their contemporaries suggest it should be no longer than 4 weeks if they put the right amount of people in place. We then have the arduous and we suspect painfully slow process of waiting for someone between Zurich insurance, Vericlaim, Quantum Survey & Project Management and Teignbridge Council to agree on what other works are needed. How long that will take is a complete mystery.
We are still trying to find out information regarding various matters from a number of parties involved in this saga and no doubt more will be revealed in time and we shall keep you updated.
Thank you to all of those that have supported us and if anyone has the knowledge or influence in speeding matters along and wishes to help then please write, call or email the powers that be.
We won’t be beaten and look forward so much to being able to open and see all our customers again in a building and town we love. Please share with as many as possible.
Thank you to all the Beachcombers from The Beachcomber Team.

We have had so many enquiries from our loyal customers during the past six weeks since the fire on the 25th July 2017 that we wanted to update you regarding our current situation.
A small amount of asbestos in the kitchen of the Beachcomber’s ceiling was disturbed due to the fire. The building is Teignbridge Council owned and it has been decided to completely remove the entire asbestos lined ceiling throughout the building using the financial assistance of the building insure...rs. We are informed this will take up to a further six weeks. Sadly there appears to be little urgency or co-ordination between the Council, the insurance loss adjusters and the appointed project managers, which is a great shame. We know that if it was under our control the building would have had the asbestos removed by now, undergone a complete refit and would have reopened at the beginning of October. As it stands after numerous visits to site we are STILL waiting for someone to approve a contractor. We have had absolutely no say in the matter and find the handling and delay extremely frustrating.
As always, we are overwhelmed by our customers, fellow traders and Teignmouth Town Council’s constant support. Rest assured, as one of Teignmouth’s largest employer with over 40 local staff and using many local suppliers we are anxious to reopen as soon as possible. With Teignbridge Council’s pledged support and help we are confident we will be given the building back free of asbestos by the middle of October this year. We hope to reopen with a new look inside and out with a few additions, but being careful to retain the beachside authenticity and the same beautiful curved roof and proportions that this iconic seaside building has to offer. We really do want to keep serving you 364 days a year for many years to come, with all the delicious meals and cakes you have all grown to love including those yummy Lemon Meringue Pies.
We will be posting constant updates from now on regarding our progress and if anyone wishes to help then please write, call or email the powers that be, to assist us to reopen as quickly as possible. Please share with as many as possible.
Thank you to all the Beachcombers from The Beachcomber Team.

We have been completely overwhelmed by the kindness of our friends, customers, local clubs and businesses since we suffered the awful events of Tuesday evening and send out a heartfelt thank you. The offers of help range from hands on cleaning through to the loan of equipment to assist us in getting our beloved cafe up and running, if we haven't yet been in touch then please bear with us. There is a huge amount going on behind the scenes and we hope to post an update next week with our plans moving forward.
Our colleagues will be in the Teignmouth Carnival procession this evening so please give them an extra special wave as they go past!
With best wishes and thanks from all the staff at The Beachcomber Cafe xx

**Burglary Update**
The police are currently investigating the break in at The Beachcomber during the early hours of Sunday morning. Not content with their stash on their way out the offenders completed their robbery with the theft of personal belongings, three charity boxes and the staff tip box. We know these people are Teignmouth residents, they are the lowest of the low and we know that somewhere out there someone has information to help the police. We have a fabulous ...town, lets keep it that way, share this post and lets put these vile individuals behind bars where they belong.

One of friendliest bunch of staff I have ever come across, the cafe serves lovely food, views are amazing and it opens early for anyone who wants an early coffee or breakfast, I go every morning to meet friends and am missing the place, please hurry up and re open.

User

My wife and I Always use the Beachcomber when ever we visit Teignmouth and Dawlish. The Beachcomber is a wonderful step back in time, where the customer is still king and the wonderful people that work there still have a big pride in their service. The food is always served hot and very well presented. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

We recently stayed at Cofton and recommended we meet and eat at the Beachcomber, to say they were impressed would be an understatement.

I would like to publicly acknowledge all the Great Service the Beachcomber provides. And long may they continue.

Lovely views with really good breakfasts that are cooked to perfection my only issue is I wish they did eggs on toast with the odd side as don't always want a full fry up so not a complaint just an advisory

User

Lovely seafront cafe - very popular and decent food (especially the Lemon Meringue Pie!) until recently I used to eat here with my family every time we visited Teignmouth, usually 2 or 3 times a year. I've only stopped visiting due to receiving an unfair parking charge in a nearby car park - I paid/displayed as usual & still got a charge & lost my appeal- so, that £50 fine would have been spent in the local shops/pubs/cafes but now I'll never visit Teignbridge area again thanks to a dodgy parking attendant. Sorry guys! Such a shame as your Cafe is great! That's £1000's of future income I would have been spending in the local economy gone!

User

Lovely Cafe with a wide range menu, food plenty and tasteful and staff polite and friendly, we sat outside as it was a lovely day, great view of the sea and Ness. I don't have a dog but dogs are allowed in the Cafe too

User

Love visiting the beachcomber cafe, the staff are always friendly and helpful and the food is lovely. They also have loads of yummy cakes and puddings, they too are delicious. If you are planning a trip to Teignmouth visit the Beachcomber Cafe for a meal or a coffee and a cake, you won't be disappointed.

User

User

Have been there good few times, great food, great service, couldnt fault anything. It is our regular place to have lunch now on. Looking forward to move permanantly in teignmouth in a months time. I would suggest Beachcomber Cafe to come up with a loyalty card scheme like other places around.

User

Fab location and reasonably priced very tasty food! Plenty of choice for a Vegetarian and quick friendly service by the staff- we were made to feel very welcome and weren't made to rush out the door when they were closing up! Deffo one to go back to! Xx

User

Called in for an early breakfast after a walk along the front, it was so refreshing to have more than a 'full English' on the menu. It just had to be pancakes, fresh fruit & ice cream and waffle fresh fruit & honey. Wonderfully presented and tasted good also. Two good mugs of coffee to finish.

User
