About Become Robotics

Why ‘Become' Robotics? There are two main reasons for the name. The first is that BECOME is an acronym for Behavioural Ecology of Collectives for Monitoring the Environment. Behavioural ecology is an area of biology concerned with how and why animals behave the way they do in their natural environment. Some animals (like ant and honeybee colonies, or schools of fish) naturally live in collectives. Together they are highly adept at monitoring their environment to satisfy vital needs such as food and avoiding predators. At the same time, swarm robotics as a field is inspired by such collectives: and a promising use for the technology is to monitor our natural environment. Together, such animal or robotic systems become ‘more than the sum of their parts'. The second reason is that many people today, young students or older professionals, would like to get involved with the growing field of robotics. They would like to become robotics engineers themselves, in some way. Therefore as a service to the community, Become Robotics will promote knowledge and dialogue about robotics and ways into this exciting area of industry.
