The last weekend of July saw temperatures soar to 35 degrees, it also saw @britishfirefighterchallenge hit Bury St Edmunds.
Hosted by Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service around 200 firefighters took part in this annual sporting event which pushes them to their limits and raisesfunds for The Fire Fighters Charity
Walking away as the fastest female to complete the course, Emily Crawford a Firefighter Dunstable Community Fire Station said:
... “I hadn’t entered the challenge but was inspired by what I saw. I knew one of the volunteers running the event, who asked why I wasn’t competing, so I decided to register to compete on the Saturday (28/7).
“I of course hadn’t done any specific training for it and it was tough in the heat, but it was good fun. I was very surprised to come away from it as the Female British Champion".
Participants had to complete the following in full fire kit with a BA set:
• Stair ascent (3 floors) • Hose Haul • Stair decent • Keiser Force Machine • Hose drag • Hose Makeup • Container carry • Dummy drag (60m with an 80kg dummy)
Six other Bedfordshire Firefighters completed the challenge:
• Chris Mattingley from Biggleswade Community Fire Station • Chris Dominy from Kempston Community Fire Station • Matthew Dear from Biggleswade • Marcus Van Den Oetelaar from Dunstable • Simon Wallis from Dunstable • Gemma Salter from Dunstable and Biggleswade
We are hugely proud of you all for taking part in this event and a special well done to Emily on this great achievement. Here’s to next year! 💪🚒

The law on speeding - You must not drive faster than the speed limit for the type of road and your type of vehicle. The speed limit is the absolute maximum and it doesn’t mean it's safe to drive at this speed in all conditions.

Thank you to everyone who came along to Bedford Community Fire Station Open Day last weekend and helped to raised £896.05 which will be split between The Fire Fighters Charity and Bedfordshire Fire Cadets fund.
Special thanks to the Cadets who helped to keep the event running while crews responded to operational demand.
Temporary Station Commander, Simon Williams expressed his thanks to the Cadets for assisting on the open day. “The on duty crews had to respond to fire calls... throughout the afternoon and the Open Day could have been brought to a close if it wasnt for all the help and hard work of the cadets".

Speed is one of the main factors in fatal road accidents and are four times as likely on rural “A” roads as urban “A” roads. Speed limits are there for a reason and always consider the road conditions.

Nationally six people have died in open water or in the sea recently showing that under-estimating the dangers of water can have tragic consequences. The key to staying safe is making the right choices to avoid getting into difficulty in the first place. Follow these top tips to help keep you safe:
• take notice of safety information, warning signs and flags; • do not jump or dive or tombstone into rivers; it may be hot outside but the water temperature is likely to be cold ...and could cause your body to go into cold water shock; • it's hard to judge the depth of a river or lake just by looking, and there could be submerged dangers such as weeds or rubbish; • always keep your children under supervision and ensure they do not get out of their depth; • don’t let your children play in the water if you have or are consuming alcohol, don’t drink and swim; • if you see someone in trouble in the water call 999 immediately, don’t go into the water to help them, use a lifebelt, tree branch or some implement to help them, going into the water risks your life too; • don't go into water near locks, weirs, sluices, bridges and pipes as these structures are often linked with strong currents; • the water in rivers and lakes can be colder than you expect at any time of the year; cold water shock will affect your ability to swim, look after yourself, or rescue others; • get trained in lifesaving and resuscitation techniques so you know what to do in an emergency; • airbeds, inner tubes and other flotation devices can easily be carried or blown in to deep water and may not keep you afloat.

Shout out to the local residents and farmers of Green End, Maulden for their assistance with a woodland fire on Thursday (26/7)
Crews from Ampthill Community Fire Station and Kempston Community Fire Station were unable to access the area in the rescue pump so while they waited for the Multi-Role Vehicles from Sandy Fire Station and Woburn Community Fire Station residents and farmers shuttled them in to the woods by alternative means.
The fire is believed to have started due... to a disposable BBQ, while it may be tempting to enjoy a BBQ in our beautiful countryside in this warm weather we have been having it can have devastating effects.
Please take care and:
❌Avoid having bonfires, take waste to your local Recycling Centre ❌Don't discard cigarettes or matches whilst walking or driving through the countryside ❌Don't have BBQs in unauthorised areas and make sure it is cold before it is disposed of correctly ❌Never leave a BBQ unattended ❌Don't start campfires in the countryside ❌Don't discard rubbish - litter such as reflective cans and glass can start fires ❌If you live close to woodland or heathland do not burn off garden rubbish during hot weather ❌Report any evidence of illegal fire setting activity

On Saturday night just before 10pm crews from Shefford Community Fire Station Biggleswade Community Fire Station Sandy Fire Station Bedford Community Fire Station Kempston Community Fire Station were called to a fire at a barn in Clifton where bales of hay had caught fire.
Firefighters used two jets and two hose reels to extinguish the fire.

User

We realise that in the hot weather we have had recently that local rivers and lakes look very inviting but there are hidden dangers which can catch even the strongest of swimmers off guard.
Our thoughts are with the victim's family and friends at this very difficult time.

Yesterday two fire engines were in attendance at a residence , the owners dog was spooked and bolted from the house . Unfortunately it ran straight across the road and was unlucky one who's car struck it . The crews from the two appliances were brilliant and fortunately I wasn't driving fast the collie dog whilst shocked has no broken bones just a couple of cuts and bruising . Big thank you to the fire and rescue crews .

User

Well done,to all involved,in containing this fire.!

User

Today a crew from Bedford visited my sons school and he had a great time using the hose, has told me all about 'stop drop and roll', and how dangerous fireworks can be. Educational and hopefully lifelong memories for him!

User

Thank you Bedford Red Watch Richard, David and Monique for my home fire safety check very friendly and professional crew.

User

Kempston watch came to my school to do a visit. WM Shrehane was fantastic. He pitched it to the correct level, was informative but at the same time he didn't overload the children with information. As a specialist teacher I would like to praise the watch, in particular as they are not specifically trained to work with children; this crew was outstanding. Many thanks for taking the time to carry out your visit, it was extremely beneficial to all.

User

Just wanted to say a big thank you to the engines from Kempston who attended our property at 2am after a lightening strike this morning in Clifton.

We were so lucky could have been so much worse, the crews checked the house from top to bottom, fitted new fire alarms and have lots of really helpful advice. They really were fantastic

A massive thanks to all the fire fighters who attended the fire at Aspley Court, Woburn Sands on new years day. Such professionalism on display and amazing care shown to our residents on the day. A special mention to Paul Goddard who showed such incredible kindness to the individual who had the fire. We owe you.

User

A massive thank you to i think it would have been the Kempston guys who came out last night and sorted the van that had been set alight. The were here within minutes of us calling and had it under control in no time at all.. They then tested the smoke alarms to check they were working. Thank you all
