Belper Bicycle Club Description

The club started out life in the 1940s as Belperion Road Club, before re-emerging in the mid 1970s as Belper BC, with sponsorship from Thorntons Toffee (who had a factory in the town). The club were known as Belper BC Thorntons Toffee during this period. This continued up until 1988 when Thorntons became a PLC and sponsorship ceased.

The club was established primarily to cater for the needs of local riders interested in competing in Time Trials and Road Racing. Over the years Belper BC has produced many riders who have competed successfully at regional, national and international level and the club continues to do so today.

The red and white jersey comes from when Thorntons sponsored the club. The late Ian Ringrose redesigned the kit with idea of the stars and stripes from the 1984 Olympics held in Los Angeles, USA. The kit has since had a couple of updates since but still retains the stars and stripes theme.

Famous riders for the club through the years have included (amongst others) Derrick Woodings, Mike Allen, Dave Orford, Rex Butler, Mick Potts, Mark Storer and Carl Owen.

The club supports both competitive and non-competitive cyclists. Members currently compete in Road Racing, Time Trialling, Cyclocross and Mountain Bike cross country events. Non-competitive participation includes touring, cyclo sportifs, club road rides and club MTB rides.

Riders meet every Sunday morning for the club run, either at Belper Triangle at 9am or outside the Hurt Arms, at the junction of the A6 and A610 in Ambergate at 9: 15am, to normally return around mid-day.

The club night is the first Monday every month (except Bank Holidays - then it's a week later) at the Strutt Club, Campbell Street in Belper between 7pm – 9pm.

*COVID-19 update* Further to the post and email on 16th March, It is with great sadness we have now taken the decision to suspend all club rides until further notice based on the updated guidance from British Cycling yesterday, published 17th March. https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/…/202 00317-about-bc-news-…. During this difficult period let’s try and keep everyone’s morale going by sharing news and ways we are keeping cycling, the funnier the better! It’s also possible to u...se this as a platform to share experiences of getting through this and for any help members may need if in isolation. Stay safe and let’s look forward to getting things up and running again as soon as we can. Regards Nick Bates Club Chairperson

Dear all Considering today’s government announcement regarding the ongoing global COVID-19 situation, the committee have virtually met this evening to consider how this affects us as a club. Whilst we all have an individual responsibility to follow the current guidelines in reducing the transmission of the virus, we’d like to offer some guidance on the future of rides and events as follows: • British Cycling encourages all to continue to cycle outdoors to maintain and improve... health, wellbeing and resilience and therefore we will continue to offer rides unless the guidance changes • Rides will no longer include Café stops or pub stop. Routes may be shortened to allow for this. Stops will be built in to allow breaks when riders can use their own drinks, snacks, energy bars etc. • When meeting at the start of a ride, all are encouraged to keep dispersed and ride off in small groups • Please avoid spitting on rides for obvious reasons! • For forthcoming events, please look out for announcements regarding postponements, cancellations or amendments We will endeavour to keep the above under review as national advice evolves and will be in touch with any changes.
Thanks for your understanding.
