Coronavirus & angling update Dear Fisheries & Angling Customer,
Following the Government’s announcement on 23rd March, the Canal & River Trust, with the full support of Angling Trust, are asking that all anglers follow the current guidance and stop fishing on our canals, reservoirs and other stillwaters for the time being.
... I know this will come as a disappointment to some, but it is imperative that the angling community follows government guidelines and acts to protect ourselves, our families, fishery bailiffs and the communities on our waterways during this critical period. Our day to day on the ground fisheries work will be put on hold for the present although we will still respond to emergencies around pollutions, fish mortalities etc.
There will come a time when we will be able to reverse these measures and we hope that will not too far away. Fisheries and angling has come a long way since the formation of the Trust back in 2012 and the support of our clubs and partners is especially critical during this time.
When the national picture changes, we are all ready to deliver the Let’s Fish campaign including the Angling Direct junior/cadet and youth national championships. In partnership with Angling Trust, we are ready - given the opportunity - to deliver the Dynamite Bait Canal Pairs championships and the two divisions of the national championships later in the year.
This national crisis represents an interesting opportunity for our sport. Whilst the angling community understand the proven benefits on active lifestyles, physical health and mental wellbeing that fishing provides, this reality is not yet as well understood in the wider world.
In partnership with Angling Trust, we aim to work with Government, the Environment Agency and Sport England to ensure that access to fishing and the benefits it brings are part of the nation's plan for ensuring our community’s health and wellbeing.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and understanding at this time.
