Incident - Fire In Disused Block Of Flats
Date: 20/01/2020 Time: 04:33 Location: Atlantic Way, Westward Ho... Area: Central County: Devon
3 fire appliances from Bideford and Barnstaple, together with an aerial ladder platform from Barnstaple, were mobilised following a call from multiple calls from local residents reporting a fire at a disused block of flats. As calls came in they confirmed the roof looked to be on fire.
On arrival of the initial crews from Bideford the attendance was immediately increased by a 4th pumping appliance from Barnstaple, a water carrier from Danes Castle and welfare pod from Ivybridge. Shortly after this a crew from Appledore was requested for additional personnel. Due to information from the Police the incident was also being treated as possible persons reported, even though the flats and building were reported as disused at the time of call.
At 05:26hrs the attendance was once again increased by a further fire appliance from Braunton, together with a Command Support vehicle from Ilfracombe.
At 05:34hrs crews confirmed that the ground and first floor was heavily involved in fire, and the incident had been sectorised into 2 sectors for the most effective firefighting. 2 breathing apparatus, 1 hose reel jet, a covering jet and 2 main jets were in use across both sectors, utilising the aerial ladder platform to aid external firefighting.
At 07:49hrs crews confirmed they were making steady progress and that solar panels had been identified and isolated with the assistance of the electricity board. The incident was still being treated as possible persons reported.
Update 08:41 All persons are now accounted for.
Update 10:00 There are now 2 pumping appliances and an aerial ladder platform still at the scene. Good progress is being made damping down.
Further updates to follow....
