About Bihr - The British Institute Of Human Rights

BIHR is a charity committed to bringing human rights to life across the UK by empowering people and organisations to know, use and protect human rights.

Bihr - The British Institute Of Human Rights Description

BIHR is an independent human rights charity that is committed to challenging inequality and social justice in everyday life in the UK. We want a society that has become stronger because all human beings are equally valued, can participate fully and are treated with fairness, dignity and respect. We believe that human rights have meaning and benefit for everyone. They are not just abstract or legal concepts and documents – they can be brought to life, and used practically to create a fairer, more tolerant society and tackle inequality and disadvantage. We think that this can only happen if human rights are understood, applied and claimed, outside the courtroom and by a wide range of people and organisations.

Today is a big day for us, we are convening a meeting of our Alliance, a group of orgs committed to protecting #humanrights and the #HumanRightsAct. Today we are discussing the JCHR inquiry into 20 years of the Human Rights Act.

Thanks for following our weekend of what is BIHR ! We are going to put our feet up now. But we leave you with one of our favourite #humanrights quotes which sums up the work we do. See you tomorrow.

What don't we do at BIHR ? We don't do court work, litigation or legal advice. We believe that if we prioritise empowering people and providing education, training and knowledge to staff, leaders, policy makers etc, then we won't need the court rooms.

Yesterday, our twitter was devoted to some of what we do as an organisation. Today, it's devoted to what we don't do.Not to kill your Sunday vibe but because it's important to know. We hope you'll read our tweets as the day passes. Thanks for all of your likes and comments so far.

Fact 5: "Wow, that's a lot of work for a small team. Do you do anything else?" Yes, we coproduce #humanrights resources, all of which are available from here, for FREE! And, that's enough about us for one day. Enjoy your evening! http://ow.ly/d5Wh30lmb3f

Fact 4: Anything else? Yes, we produce policy and legal briefings, we blog about legal developments and what they mean outside of courtrooms, we campaign to protect our #HumanRightsAct, we provide media commentary when #humanrights are at stake... http://ow.ly/d/7QST

User

Fact 3: What else do you do? We empower people, families and carers to know their rights and to feel confident speaking up for them. Something a person might think is "just how things are", we are there to explain their legal rights in a way that is relevant to every day life.

User

Fact 2:What does BIHR do? We exist to make sure that we all know what our #humanrights are and that we can benefit from them in our every day lives. We train doctors, nurses, advocates, social workers (and loads more) to embed human rights in their practice.

Fact 1: At BIHR we are a small team, there's less than 10 of us. We are a mix of lawyers, law students, researchers, trainers and what brings us all together is our love of #humanrights. Oh and yes, some of us like to dance! Meet us all here: http://ow.ly/OC1Z30lm8Qg

User

Do you ever find yourself wondering, who actually are BIHR and what do they do? Are they lawyers? Are they teachers? Do they like to dance? Well, this weekend we thought we'd devote our twitter to us, who we are and what we do (and don't) do. Hold onto your hats.
