Appeal for Broad Lanes Primary class of ‘69 pupils
Wolverhampton City Archives are on the hunt for former Class 2 pupils that attended Bilston’s Broad Lanes Primary School in 1969.
The archive of the Britten-Pears Foundation has shared with Wolverhampton City Archives a collection of letters sent to Benjamin Britten, an English composer, conductor and pianist who was a central figure of 20th-century British classical music.
... In July 1969, pupils sent these letters to the composer after participating in a local music festival, held at Wolverhampton’s Grand Theatre, where they performed some of his work. They were keen to find out what other music he had composed.
As the 50th anniversary of these letters approaches the City Archives, owned and operated by City of Wolverhampton Council, is keen to trace some of the pupils from the class of 69 to assist in collecting information, images and sound bites for an exhibition to celebrate the composer and music that once elated audiences.
Heidi McIntosh, City Archives Senior Archivist: “We were delighted when the Britten-Pears Foundation made contact with us and we hope that we can connect former pupils with these letters and music that they once performed.”
The piece the children performed in 1969 is Britten’s ‘Friday Afternoons’, a suite of songs he wrote for schoolchildren during 1933-35 when he was a very young man. The 12 songs were a dedication to his brother Robert who was a teacher.
For anyone interested in speaking to a member of the City Archives team and sharing their story, please email archives@wolverhampton.gov.uk, message us on Facebook (@wolvesarchives)/Twitter (@WolvesArchives), or call 01902 552480 during opening hours (Wednesday 1pm – 7pm, Thursday and Friday 10am – 4pm and Saturdays 10am – 1pm).

Councillor Claire Darke will become the 161st Mayor of the City of Wolverhampton at tomorrow night's full council meeting.
Councillor Darke, who has represented the city's Park ward for 11 years, will make recognising the contribution of women and prevention of suicide and self-harm the themes of her year in office.
On Wednesday, her fellow councillors will be asked to vote on a motion which will make her Mayor and she will then take the oath of office.
... Councillor Darke has been deputy mayor for the past 12 months. She will replace Cllr Phil Page at the city’s first citizen.
Councillor Darke’s consort for 2019/2020 will be her husband, Dr Paul Darke.
During her time on the council, Cllr Darke has been chair of the petitions committee and cabinet member for education amongst other roles.
She said, “Wolverhampton was founded by a woman, yet I am just the 10th woman to be Mayor. For that reason, I have chosen the contribution of women to the city be one of my themes for the year.”
In line with tradition, Councillor Darke has selected good causes which she will raise money for over the year. Her chosen good causes are Wolverhampton Suicide Prevention Stakeholders Forum and the University of Wolverhampton Alumni Mayoral Scholarship Fund – a new venture to support local people into higher education.
