Birdswood Description

Heritage narrow boat operated by canal restoration charity Friends of the Cromford Canal (Registered Charity No. 1100700). The 1938-built historic former cargo boat Birdswood runs public cruises along 1. 5 miles of the beautiful Cromford Canal, which was opened in 1794 and abandoned 150 years later.

The northern section of the canal runs along the Derwent Valley, one of the cradles of the Industrial Revolution thanks to the inventions and the factory system pioneered by 18th century entrepreneurs such as Arkwright and the Strutts.

As well as possessing a rich industrial archaeological and transport heritage, the valley is an important wildlife habitat, with the entire section cruised by Birdswood designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. As well as being home to large numbers of water birds, the canal is notable for its population of water voles, a species that has declined by 95% since 1970.

Birdswood features a traditional rear boatman's cabin, which is maintained in original condition and can be viewed by passengers during their trip. There is also a toilet and refreshment facilities. Unfortunately, there is no wheelchair access on this heritage vessel.

As well as running scheduled public services, Birdswood is available for school parties and private charters.
