About Birth Trauma Association (Uk)

Welcome to the Birth Trauma Association (BTA). WHO ARE WE?The BTA is a UK charity supporting parents who suffer birth trauma – a shorthand term for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after birth. According to recent research, c. 30, 000 women a year experience birth trauma in the UK. WHAT IS BIRTH TRAUMA?Instead of being joyful and happy, the experience of giving birth can be frightening. Perhaps the baby's heart rate dipped, leading to an emergency C-section. Maybe you or your baby suffered injuries. Or maybe you felt you weren't well looked after or communicated with. You might have felt scared that you or the baby were going to die. As with any other traumatic experience – an accident, an assault, witnessing war – a traumatic birth can lead to symptoms of PTSD: flashbacks, a sense of heightened anxiety, avoiding anything that reminds you of the event, etc. Birth trauma can make it difficult to bond with your baby. You may find your symptoms are triggered by reminders of the birth: pregnant women, other babies, programmes such as One Born Every Minute. Witnessing someone else's trauma can also be traumatic, so partners can experience PTSD too. WHAT DO WE DO?We provide sources of treatment and advice on our website, a private peer support group on Facebook, and a team of trained support volunteers (available to speak to via email [support@birthtraumaassociation.org. uk] or telephone [0203 621 6338] ). CAMPAIGNINGWe also aim to help health care professionals who wish to learn more about preventing and /or treating birth trauma. We encourage (and participate in) research into failings in maternity care, with the aim of improving it. We are the only organisation in the UK which deals solely and specifically with this issue. WE ARE ALL VOLUNTEERS……and remain dependent on donations to fund programmes, campaigns, and training. https://www. justgiving.com/birthtraumaassn
