Black Dog Recording Studio Description

Not for profit community focussed recording studio

Sadly, the origins of the project delve deep into the dark underbelly of gang culture, dysfunctional family life and bleak aspirational outlook. In 2011, a chance encounter between two people with links to the Gorton area began a roller-coaster ride that culminated in a community-based venture encompassing a youth music project, a garden and a cafe. Many, many people were involved in the process – they know who they are – and without their efforts and dedication, Black Dog Recording Studio, as it is today, would not have been possible. Most people who ‘come along for a quick look’ are generally captivated by the welcoming nature and talent of the youth group and the impressive recording facilities available, and soon become supporters of the project in some way.

One of those people who ‘just popped in for a look’, retired former Detective Chief Inspector Allan Donoghue, was instrumental in expanding the youth project which was aimed at targeting potentially disaffected and vulnerable young people in the Gorton area and providing them with a safe haven to express their musical talents. When the newly formed youth project members were asked “what do you want the most”, the resounding and unanimous response was…a recording studio. With the help of a proceeds of crime grant, Allan, almost single-handedly, started to build a studio using an unused area at the rear of Sacred Heart church in 2012, with the help of an eager but small group of part-time volunteers. Influenced by the world-famous Blueprint Studios in Manchester, Ladybird Studio was officially opened by the late Sir Gerald Kaufman, a strong advocate and supporter of the project, in July 2015. Since its launch, the studio has recorded a significant number of songs written and performed by the Safe Ambition members as well as other notable recordings for local musicians, schools and vocal performers.

In April 2017, Black Dog Recording Studio was unleashed. . .
