Blackdown Shepherd Huts

About Blackdown Shepherd Huts

We specialise in producting hand-crafted traditional style shepherd huts near Taunton, Somerset . The first evidence of a shepherd's hut dates from 1596, becoming commonly used by shepherds in the 1800's, when sheep were moved across the light chalky soils of Southern England to fertilise the land. The shepherd's hut was their kitchen, bedroom, dining room and storeroom all rolled into one. There were various designs but they were all constructed to provide durable and practical accommodation. Shepherd huts generally had a stove in the corner for heating and cooking. Strong axles and cast iron wheels were used to withstand the constant movement from field to field. At Blackdown Shepherd Huts we have created a blend of traditional beauty and modern day luxury to manufacture solid, stylish and durable shepherd huts, as versatile and practical as they always have been.
