Just a stone’s throw out of the Northern Quarter, heading out (marginally) into Ancoats you'll find the Blackjack Taphouse located at a building that has long been known as the Smithfield Market Tavern. The old girl herself was packed full of heritage, history and character. . . it underwent some changes, some for good, some for bad over the past few years.
We're hoping to bring all of her worldly charms back and hear the resonating murmurs of lively chat, music and merriment once more.
We could just try to fake a classic pub environment, manufacture old characteristics or fabricate a history, but frankly people can spot a charlatan rip off from a mile away. So, we decided to make a new 'pub' - A Modern Day Proper Pub!
So, the result is a newish looking space but with every ingredient that makes a pub what a pub should be and how we all remember them being; the kind of pub we all grew up in. We hope it evolves over time and gets it's own grace, warmth and charm, becomes something genuine, for good people and like the best pubs, is a community in itself, inside it's walls.
The pub will of course play host to our own range of Blackjack Beers and then rolling specials from far and wide. Beer will be a big focus and we would like to think of it as a 'beer mecca' but to be honest - other people specialise and do it better than we can! We prefer to think of it as a pub that just so happens be smashed full with good beer. Lots of it. Why can't a proper pub have the good stuff?
We'll be sure to have a solid list of spirits, with a good selection of rums, gins, single malts and bourbons. We'll steer clear of cocktails, we'll leave that to the pro's but I'm sure a hot toddy and bloody Marie will see you right.
Then we’ll hold host to all the things a real pub can do, which could be just about anything. From community meetings to darts leagues, to cheese nights to a raucous folk nights to swinging jazz sessions to beer launches and brewer fun times. It’s effectively a comfortable space with some nice drinks in… what happens in there is as much up to friends, locals and visitors alike - the pub itself is just a platform to shoot the arrow from, if you will.
We’re still hunting down a Bar billiards table, Backgammon sets, Dominoes, Chess boards and have our hearts set on a Juke Box if we can twist the owners arm… we’re looking forward to seeing the pub find its shape, but the cornerstone remains… we’ll be a pub! For good folks, with good booze and good buzz.

We would really rather you didn't steal our lovely pet portrait pictures. That's 2 gone now. Geoff the Alsation (oil on board) and Betty the King Charles spannel (framed cross-stitch) have been taken from us.

We'll be welcoming the beaut that is Caribbean Chocolate Cake, with three of its finest buddies to the taps in celebration of it's fifth birthday. I mean, generally we'd be pretty content with just Caribbean Chocolate Cake, but when you add these guys into the mix as well, it makes the day a whole lot better.

Caribbean Chocolate Cake... 7.4% Tropical Stout with Cacao Nibs & Cypress Wood. This collaboration with Cigar City Brewing is one of our all-time favourites. Caribbean Chocolate Cake is a dense, rich and luxurious stout with cacao nibs hand-roasted by the esteemed Willie's Cacao. Pure bottled indulgence.
Caribbean Chocolate Ginger Cake 7.4% Tropical Stout with Spices, Ginger, Cacao Nibs & Cypress Wood. This beer is a new spin on Caribbean Chocolate Cake, one of our all-time favourite beers brewed in collaboration with Cigar City Brewing. Ginger, muscovado and carefully selected spices meet milk chocolate indulgence for a treacle-like treat.
Death by Caribbean Chocolate Cake 10.5% Imperial Tropical Stout with Cacao Nibs & Cypress Wood This is an amped-up version of one of our all-time favourite beers, Caribbean Chocolate Cake brewed in collaboration with Cigar City Brewing. Even more hand-roasted cacao nibs, even more lactose, even more bottled indulgence. This is the big one.
Barrel Aged Caribbean Chocolate Cake 8.7% Bourbon Barrel Aged Tropical Stout with Cacao Nibs & Cypress Wood. This is a special barrel aged version of Caribbean Chocolate Cake, one of our all-time favourite beers brewed in collaboration with Cigar City Brewing. Our dense, rich and luxurious stout has been ageing in a selection of bourbon barrels, picking up delicious vanilla, whiskey and wood character.

It’s all true isn’t it!
Battle will be commencing at the Smithfield and we're thirsty - not blood thirsty though, we'll be swapping that undrinkable mess out for some top class Ale! Far more palatable.
The War of the Roses (beer version) is on!
We've teamed up our own Blackjack Beers with Pomona Island Brew Co and Track Brewing Co. to represent the Lancs.
... We'll be taking on a crack team of Yorks, with Saltaire Brewery North Brewing Co & The Ilkley Brewery joining forces to bring the fight down to Manchester especially for Manchester Beer Week.
We'll all be here from 7pm, duking it out, Beer v Beer (possibly dart v dart, maybe even backgammon dice v dice) to see who takes home the gold...en ale award. We'll have voting cards on the bar and we'll give everyone and good night of drinking, judging and critiquing and we'll announce our winners the following day.
Expect to see one beer from each brewery, and one special collab beer launching on the night from either side, as the 5.5% Pale Beer Battle goes down!
Purchases as many or as few as you'd like but, bear in mind your vote can't count if its an odd number. Post your votes back at the bar before you leave and we'll get counting! We'll have a special price for all 8 beers in halves for you and we'll just tick your score sheets as you get them - no need to worry about having them all at once!

By 6pm Friday 21st (yes this Friday!) we'll have brewed our collab beer for Aficionado Records 20th Birthday and to cool ourselves down, we'll be kicking back in the Blackjack Brewtap yard for a surprise mini Friday Brewtap of Bliss.... made so by the boys from Aficionado who will be spinning tunes from 6pm right through!
You probably know what to expect with these guys, they've been around for long enough! You'll be hearing the sweet... sweet, elegant sounds of Moonboots, Jay Boardman and a special guest in James ‘Begin’ Holroyd. Spinning a whole bunch of 45’s from Ambient to Acid and all points in-between.
Come down grab an ale and make merry.

My favourite pub in Manchester City Centre. Great atmosphere, knowledgeable service and great beers and craft ciders on tap. Try before you buy. Also fantastic pork pies and pork scratchings. A few CAMRA nerds to be found but generally a great mix of people enjoying a great pint. Well worth a visit.

Dangerously good beers by BlackJack and other UK craft beers specially selected by BJ. Line your stomach before hand as no hot food, I witnessed the owner wade through 4 packets of prawn cocktail crisps in succession.. (Pairs well apparently with their recent "Sheffield Honey" colab with #runaway brewery.. )

Always a superb range of quality beers and a great relaxed atmosphere. Top class and not to be missed. Great range of prices too to suit all pockets.
Excellent choice of beers and ciders but the best thing is they let my dog in and she quite happily falls asleep as it has such a homely feel in here.
