Blackpool Sands

About Blackpool Sands

Blackpool Sands, set in a sheltered bay near Dartmouth surrounded by evergreens and pines, is one of South Devon's most beautiful natural treasures.

Blackpool Sands Description

Blackpool Sands, set in a sheltered bay surrounded by evergreens and pines, is one of South Devon's most beautiful natural treasures. An award-winning, privately managed 'Blue Flag' family beach with turquoise blue sea giving it an almost Mediterranean feel.

A shingle beach, as are all the main beaches in Start Bay and all incorporating ‘Sands’ as a historical name, is located only 3 miles West of Dartmouth on the beautiful South Devon heritage coast in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
With sand pits, a bathing raft, kayaks and paddle boards for hire, a range of delicious hot and cold food and a beach shop, it has something for all the family. But don't just take our word for it, come and see for yourself!

NEWS!!! We are now officially part of the #2 Minute Beach Clean! Blackpool Sands is already one of the most beautifully clean beaches you will find, but so much water-borne rubbish washes up even we can't keep up with it, so anyone who loves the environment as much as we do is always welcome here! If you have any spare bags, bring them along too, happy picking! 😎😍 #2MinuteBeachClean

We love Blackpool Sands. Off season even better.. Best view when driving from Skole Fleming and approaching the left turn into the drive toward Blackpool Sands.

We love swimming there and have a food pit stop ..at the cafe. Bkf best .. but anytime.. We love this spot of South Devon. Also easy to access with children etc. if you are not really into walking for miles before getting a dip.

The most beautiful beach in Devon and the Venus Cafe is wonderful

User

Lovely pebbles beach between cliffs. Safe soft waters for the little one not very rough. Must get there early to get car park space and it costs £8. Otherwise park at the next village where there is free parking and it's only a 15 minute walk to the beach along Old Road. Worth a visit on a hot summer day. Much needed Aloe Vera gelly as aftersun skin recuperation.

User

Lovely beach, not sand nut fine shingle. Can still make a pile and put a flag in it. Near the rear of the beach there are sandpits. Glorious views - and lots of boats passing the day we went. River at side of beach, quite a few rocks for adventurous kids (and adults). Parking £4 all day and the cafe was pricey but we all had kids hot dog and chips lol £7 each. Would def go back

User

Love clean beach - shingle can be bit hard on your feet (lovely and soft after) so take some comfy trainers - sea beautifully clean - nice little restaurant which I thought was reasonably priced and parking £6 all day peak season isn't at all bad live in Torbay so I know you would probably pay close to that here also xx beautiful scenery and also well worth driving further along to slapton

User

It is excellent. Cafe and shop a bit expensive so next day prepared myself lol very clean, crystal clear water. Shame no sand for kids but that area of South Devon is famous for pebbles and shingles. Man made sand pit for kids though but mine had enough excitement with the pebbles. Loved digging in, also, you can keep your drink/food cold in pebbles, just make a hole and the pebbles are cold and wet. Another pos is that all your stuff is clean,no sand no mess! And lying on it is comfortable!

User

I love Blackpool Sands. And the carpark attendant was very nice and allowed us to park for free to have some lunch as we were only staying a little while. £4 for all day out is not expensive. Although £4 to have some lunch would have been and we wouldn't have stayed. So an all round plus for us.

User

Had a nice few hours there, only ruined by selfish idiots playing music so loud it could be heard from one end to the other!

User

Fantastic day on the beautiful clean beach !

Easy it park, not too busy which in the main summer hols was a relief ! X

Facilities are fantastic , wonderfully clean toilets, changing sheds and showers !

Cafe looked nice but we didn't visit, however the coffee was very nice !

Brilliant place well worth a visit !

User

Absolutely beautiful beach clear water and very well kept. I didn't mind paying the £8 for parking we did not mind the no fog policy as we understands not aĺl are dog lovers . We love dogs but we don't really want to swim with them. I have to agree the stones were a little hard on my feet but overall fantastic beach...

User

A fabulous large shingle beach that we dubbed spebbles (sand and pebbles). We got there about 9:30 and we were the first on the beach. The surrounding wooded area is spectacular and the beach is bookended with some rocky cliffs with sheep filled green fields on top. There is a nice Takeaway cafe with a great selection of good food and a sit in or out restaurant next door. At the opposite end of the car park is a small ice cream hut. The beach is pretty hard on the feet after a while, especially towards the seafront. The water does drop off sharply and has a powerful tide so young children should be watched at all times. I managed to fly my mini drone on this beach. From the air is is spectacular. You see how clear the water is and how clean the beach is kept. There was no sun raft to swim to as advertised. I think parking should be cheaper, £8 is a little steep and when we arrived the car park closest to the beach wasn't unlocked so we had to park in the toilet block car park. Oh, the toilet block has piped classical music and a mirror that makes you look distorted. The minor negatives aside I loved this beach and will return soon.

User

It is a lovely location and great at the moment as dogs are welcome and parking is free. The cafe is lovely inside but a little more expensive than some....but I thought worth it...especially as I wasn't paying 😉😜. The beach is vast but not sandy so don't go expecting sand castles. From Sat 28th parking is £3 but no doggies welcome 😥😥. Lovely place x

User

Great whilst dogs are allowed but would be better if it was actually sand. Particularly good spot with the Humpback whale showing off shore whilst we were there, although I don't supposed he/she would be too impressed as he was tangled in crab pot lines for sometime.

User

A lovely location - it only has a small,

man-made section that has sand, but the scenery is amazing and the water is very clear. Parking is £4, but as our accommodation is very local we were able to walk. The cafe is amazing - a little expensive, but the quality is very good and the staff are very friendly!

User

Love this beach, only been twice, the 2nd time was yesterday, only bad thing was the smell of the dead fish that had been washed up in the shore, it was truly awful, hopefully the next time we go they will have all been washed away.

User

Everyone has sore and bruised feet, the entry into the sea is very steep, as the water gets deep very quickly it's also quite cold however as long as you man up a bit it's very pleasant, the cafe and take away is expensive by anyone's terms and at £8 per car parking isn't good value either, so it's no surprise that it was more than 10 years ago that we last visited this beach

User

A scenic location but a big disappointment is that Blackpool Sands are not in fact sands but shingle which was uncomfortable and difficult to walk on. The car park was £6 ( and going up next week according to attendant) all day which may not seem too bad but anyone planning a short stay or quick visit to take in the views would feel hard done by. Especially when a short distance further on at Start Bay you can park for shorter periods.

User

There is no beach just pebbles a shelf into the sea no good for kids and £6 to park your car and the web site says facilities what facilities there a mile away and not open as far as u can tell

User

Sadly didn't check trip advisor first. Photo on tourist leaflet and name suggests a sandy beach. Its not, it is very sharp shingle. The parking charge was £8 for a day, bloody ripoff.

Won't be going there again. If you don't mind sore feet and paying a kings ransom to park the car regardless of how long you stay this is the beach for you.
