Blenheim Gardens Description
The 2. 6 hectare Blenheim Gardens is Minehead's largest park and was created in 1925, following the generosity of Mr. Magnor of Northfield House. Alexander Fownes Luttrell provided the land in 1911 with a conveyance expressly stating that the land was to be used only as and for a public park or pleasure ground for the Town of Minehead and for no other purpose whatsoever.
Blenheim Gardens is a high quality green space held in high regard by the local community and appreciated by visitors with formal planting and tarmac surfaced paths. It is an enclosed park with clear opening hours and is an alcohol free zone. There are several access points into the Gardens (from North Road, Blenheim Road and via a footpath from The Avenue) and a public car park with 62 spaces on the eastern boundary accessible from North Road. The original bandstand has been altered and converted to tearooms.
The grounds are level and largely as originally laid out with the exception of a row of elm trees felled in the 1970s due to Dutch elm disease. A new bandstand was created in the late 1960s. This is used for a variety of performances. This bandstand is considered to be one of the best bandstands in terms of acoustics in the south west. There is a putting green but currently there is no formal play provision for children. The Gardens contain female, male and disabled toilets.
