About Blue Apple Theatre

Blue Apple Theatre presents high quality theatre, dance & film by performers with learning disabilities, based in Winchester

Blue Apple Theatre Description

Founded in 2005 and based in Winchester, Blue Apple is an ambitious theatrical company that supports performers with learning disabilities to develop and present high quality productions for the widest possible audience – performing and touring theatre, dance and film within a variety of large and small scale venues around Hampshire and the southern regions.

Blue Apple is committed to the development of integrated and progressive opportunities within the arts for people with learning disabilities to raise the ceiling of expectation and advocate for the development of a more inclusive and equal society. The increase in confidence gained through stage performances has helped Blue Apple members to enhance their social, personal and artistic skills and achieve public recognition for their talents.

Blue Apple aims to influence national agendas around disabilities and inclusion through its performances and films by tackling challenging issues head-on. Living Without Fear addresses difficult issues around hate crime and has been performed in 42 venues to over 4, 000 people including to ministers and MPs in Parliament, resulting in changes to policing practice. The Blue Apple film Freddie’s Story responded to the Mencap report ‘Death By Indifference’ and is being used nationally to train medical staff within the NHS and private health care sector.

The company received considerable attention following a Channel 4 News feature about its performances at Shakespeare Globe in 2016, as well as its Hamlet production being the subject of the award-winning TV documentary Growing Up Down’s.

This was a rare moment when everyone was able to get together at the same time, spending the day working on our charity's vision for the next 3 to 5 years. Last year was an exciting period for Blue Apple, with significant growth across all our programme, and the future looks even more exciting!

I really enjoyed tonight's performance of Arabian Nights. Well done to everyone involved, both on and off the stage.

I believe Blue Apple can go to even higher heights. And to have new members to join we need more ladies with learning disablities to join to keep it equal with us men. The current group is good but can only get better with new members. Every year we put on a new show, make it great fun for everyone. And inspire them to join their own local theatre group if they like what they have seen. I hope the day will come when children from various schools can come and join blue apple smoothly. Blue Apple is a team builder. It builds both you as a person and as a character as well also.

An amazing group of happy talented people. Happy 10th anniversary and thank you for visiting Jersey
