Delivered new to Hants & Dorset in November 1948 with a 30 seat Dutfield coach body, HRU 451 did not actually enter service with the Company until April 1949, when the coach touring season for that year got underway. HRU 451 was repainted in Hants & Dorset's service bus livery in June 1958 and was used as a dual-purpose vehicle until withdrawn in November 1959. This photograph shows the newly repainted vehicle in June 1958 and was taken in Winchester Road, Southampton - at that time the location of Hants & Dorset's main body workshop.

Here is a reminder of the Hants & Dorset bus station at Woolston in the mid-1960s. Bristol LD6G SRU 996, which had been new in January 1957 is ready to depart for Eastleigh and Stoke Common via Hedge End and West End on route 49, while Bristol FS6G 5677 EL will shortly run to Warsash via Swanwick Lane and Park Gate on route 78. 5677 EL subsequently became a driver training bus in the late 1970s and was preserved after final withdrawal; it can now often be seen at bus rallies restored as it was when operating routes from Woolston in the 1960s. Southampton City Transport buses can be seen on the extreme right of the photograph; this location looks completely different in 2019.
