Acid and Alkaline Forming foods affect your pH balance and health For optimum health and maximum resistance to disease your diet needs to be slightly over-alkaline. To maintain optimum health the diet would consist of 80% alkaline forming foods and 20% acid forming foods. An acceptable pH level of the body is 7.36-7.44, which is slightly alkaline.
Examples of Acid forming foods:... Wheat, coffee, sugar, red meat, artificial sweeteners, black tea, peanuts, white rice, wine, wheat pasta, pork, pastries. Examples of Alkaline forming foods: Pear, lemon, watercress, spinach, ripe bananas, apple, asparagus, cabbage, raspberry, peas, fresh figs, turnip, parsnip, sweet potato. For disease prevention and optimum health: Aim to eat fruits and vegetables that are in season and locally produced. For optimum health and for disease prevention, eat 5 vegetables and 2 fruits daily, always more vegetables than fruits. These foods will be metabolised more efficiently by our bodies and maintain an alkaline environment. Cutting down on wheat based products e.g. white bread and pasta and replacing with a lesser amount of short grain brown rice or carbohydrate from root vegetables will not only aid weight loss, create an alkaline environment, but contribute to higher energy levels, prevent disease and improve wellbeing.

Vitamin D supplementation reduces risk of asthma attack
A recent Cochrane review showed that low blood levels of vitamin D (the ‘sunshine vitamin’) have been linked to an increased risk of asthma attacks in children and adults with asthma. Asthma sufferers given vitamin D experienced fewer asthma attacks that needed treatment with oral steroids. Vitamin D supplementation reduced the risk of attending hospital with an acute asthma attack from 6 per 100 to around 3 per 100. Re...searchers concluded that Vitamin D supplementation is likely to offer protection against severe asthma attacks. As usual, further trials focusing on children and people who experience frequent severe asthma attacks have been deemed necessary before definitive clinical recommendations can be made. However, given that vitamin D is an essential vitamin that’s often in short supply for many people, that surely is indication enough. Ask for a vitamin D test at Body-Balance Nutrition clinic.
