Boomers is a social enterprise founded in 2014 by Kwabena Danso with a mission to produce high quality, affordablebamboo products which have both economic and social benefits to customers around the world. Since then we haveproduced more than 2, 500 frames and thousands of bamboo accessories, from bicycle baskets to children's tricycles. Our factory is in Apaah, Ghana where our awesome team now totals over 50 young people aged between 18 and 29. We also indirectly employ 20 young people who harvest and 200 farmers who cultivate bamboo. On-the-job trainingprogrammes provide a range of skills and a steady income that can be difficult to find in rural Ghana. The Booomers journey began when Kwabena met frame-building pioneer Craig Calfee in 2009 who introduced him to the beauty and performance of bamboo bicycle frames. Kwabena identified an opportunity to help young people in rural areas of Ghana develop new skills to craft a high performance handmade product using local sustainable materials. We developed a range of frames and submitted them for testing in Germany, Taiwan and Australia to receive ISO quality certifications. In 2015 we started exporting bamboo bike frames to Germany and now have happy customers across Australasia, North America and Europe. As cyclists across the world enjoy their bamboo bicycles we want to make sure that local Ghanians can enjoy themtoo. We have gifted 150 bamboo bicycles to local schools and will extend this programme as we grow. We alsosupport 400 school children through scholarships and fund libraries and computer labs across the region. All ourrevenue comes from our product sales and all our profits are reinvested so that we can produce more frames andemploy more people or fund education in rural communities. Along the way the work of Booomers and our founder has been recognised and supported through local andinternational programmes including the YouthActionNet program in 2010, the ENGINE project funded by the UKDepartment for International Development in 2014, the Tony Eleumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Program in 2015 and the African Entrepreneurship Award 2015. Most recently we are proud that Kwabena was one of 200 selected for the Obama Foundation Leaders African Programme 2018.
