About Borrowdale Gates Hotel

Lake District 4 star luxury accommodation near Keswick, Cumbria with fine dining

Borrowdale Gates Hotel Description

Our Mission
As an upmarket hotel, our aim is to ensure our guests leave us feeling better than on arrival, and want to come back. We are told that it is often the small things that matter. Our staff are approachable, friendly and welcoming.
Our rooms are designed with attention to detail, with either patios, balconies or window seats so guests can soak up the panoramic Lakeland views. Our cuisine is designed to delight guests who come here to relax and treat themselves to something special.
Our Features
All the rooms have free Wi-Fi, fluffy bathrobes, heated towel rails, chocolates on the pillows, flatscreen TVs, DVD players available, hairdryers, a refreshment tray, and the list goes on. Some rooms have wood-effect fires for those who prefer to relax in their own space.
For our less able-bodied guests, there is an internal lift and we have suites with easy access on the ground floor and modified facilities.
Why You Should Visit Us
In the light summer evenings, guests enjoy drinks on the terrace in the private gardens. During winter evenings, the open log fires are lit in the lounge to relax with a drink before dinner after a busy day . When it rains, muddy boots and wet coats can be left in the drying room, heated by an eco-friendly biomass boiler.

Rooms & Suites
With attention to detail, it can be the small things that make a good stay fantastic. .
The aim of our recent extensive refurbishment programme was to create rooms with a “wow” factor, using stylish contemporary décor to the highest standard of local craftmanship, to make the most of the breathtaking panoramic views of the Borrowdale Valley and surrounding fells.
All rooms are individually designed – several with patio doors leading directly to the garden, so guests have convenient easy access, others have balconies with views to enjoy the fresh air. All rooms have modern bathrooms, flatscreen TVs, DVD player facilities, refreshment trays and other treats so guests can relax and retire to their rooms in comfort after an invigorating Lakeland walk or local sightseeing trip.

Fine Dining
When it comes to Fine Dining with a view and fresh local produce, our culinary expertise and Lakeland setting has earned an enviable reputation, including the AA Rosette for Culinary Excellence. Chris and his team look forward to cooking for you. Panoramic windows in the Restaurant offer captivating fell views to complement the imaginative menu. We offer a pleasing combination of traditional British dishes, using the best of local Lakeland produce, and classic French cuisine, with a light, modern interpretation. For example, our team of young passionate and talented chefs create new dishes on a regular basis, including local treats such as Fell bred Herdwick Lamb, Borrowdale Trout and fresh Game from the Holker Estate in Cartmel.
To complement the cuisine, our selection of traditional and new world wines is chosen to delight different palates and we can advise on particular wines that will suit the menu you choose.
For those who enjoy specialist wines, we offer a ’reserve’ selection featuring more exclusive wines made in smaller quantities. These ‘reserve’ wines are available to order in advance of your stay. Kindly inform us when booking whether you would like to enjoy the Reserve Wine List. The stock is held in temperature controlled cellars with our suppliers with only a few days’ notice prior to delivery.

Here is 'Wainwright' on his first adventure, thank you Kathy. As you can see he came back rather wet (could do with some waterproofs) but this didn't spoil his day out with our lovely guests, even managed to stop for a cuppa. Thank you all for your interesting name suggestions, we thought Wainwright was rather fitting. Will be interesting to see how many Wainwrights he bags in 2018!!

User

Meet our new recruit, 'Cheeky Bear' who is looking to stow away in the rucksacks of our guests whatever the weather for a day out! We would like your help with a name for him please. Thank you Sue & The Team

Did you know that many of our local fell names come from a series of Old Norse words?
Our featured room this week is Glaramara, which apparently translates as “Hill with the mountain hut by a chasm”.
Glaramara the fell has a long ridge that stretches for over six kilometres from Stonethwaite in Borrowdale up to the Esk Hause mountain pass. The central summit is 783m and there are many subsidiary tops and small tarns. This makes it an ideal spot to hone your orienteering skil...ls and offers an appealing traverse.
Fortunately, finding your way from the hotel lounge to Glaramara suite does not require a compass 😊

On our series of suite themes, can anyone guess the connection between this room photo and the date 17 June 1928?
History buffs will know the date is when Ameilia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean.
However, it is also the date that a wealthy 29 year old woman, Wai Sheung Siu Miao, checked into the Borrowdale Gates Hotel with her husband. They were on honeymoon from New York, embarking on a 2 month tour of Europe. Tragically, she did not return ...from their day out walking in the valley. There is a book in the hotel lounge that tells the story as well as a laminated sheet alongside the other information leaflets.
The room is Mandarin Suite. This is a new room in the extension built during the hotel's renovation a few years ago. It is decorated in Siu's memory. Fortunately, history has not been repeated and to date, ALL our guests have returned safely after a day out😊

Still on our theme of "name that suite", this one is less obvious.
Fairy Glen, also known as Galleny Falls, can be found near Stonethwaite in Borrowdale. A few 100 yards up the clear waters of Langstrath Beck to the lower pool, this is a perfect spot for relaxing and paddling on a hot summer's day. The more adventurous may climb just above Galleny's collection of river pools and small falls, to a tree and fern-clad area of outstanding beauty.
Our superior suite, Fairy Glen ...is easier to reach....up the lift on the second floor. Inspired by these pools, the ensuite has a bath with separate walk in shower, and "loo with a view" 😉

If you are looking for ideas for the August Bank Holiday weekend, why not pop over to the Keswick Agricultural Show on 28th August?
Originally founded in 1880, this show offers fun for all the family with horses, sheep, dogs, marquees, Cumberland wrestling, jousting displays, fell races, sheep clipping and a vintage display by West Cumbria Vintage Club.
Plus, there is some late availability for rooms if you wish to give Sue a call on 017687 77204, click on the Book Now butto...n above or visit: www.borrowdale-gates.com/booking

Very welcoming - 9 of us dropped in by chance for some lunch mid way through a walk in all our gear and a dog! Nothing too much trouble- even dog given a bowl of water on patio so we could keep an eye on her . Staff immaculate food fantastic . Thank you again !

User

Very friendly, lovely food. Views from the hotel are wonderful. Plenty of walking without taking the car out suitable for all levels of ability. Looking forwards to staying in 2017.

User

This is a lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings. The staff are friendly, welcoming, efficient and make you feel at home. Our room was very comfortable with a sitting space and good bathroom although we would have liked a shower rather than a bath.

The food was delicious and I'd go back at the drop of a hat.

User

There arent many places you visit for the first time and feel completely at home. Amazing afternoon tea, just got to go back for Sunday lunch. Smelled lovely (understatement). A huge thank you to Chris and all the very friendly and attentive staff.

My partner and I have stayed at the Borrowdale Gates Hotel twice and both times were excellent.

The hotel is in a lovely location with amazing views where we could sit and watch the wildlife.

Our recent stay was made extra special as my partner asked me to marry him while admiring the views in the lounge. We will definitely be returning.

Chris, Sue and Team do an amazing job. Theyare always very helpful and friendly.

My favourite place to stay in the Lakes. The lounge is the most wonderful place to relax in comfort with amazing views even in the rain. Food is excellent and they had no trouble catering for my gluten free needs.

User

Just back from an excellent weekend at the Borrowdale Gates. We've been twice before but this time took my mother, the kids and their partners and I'm pleased to say they all enjoyed it as much as us.

The location is spectacular with views of the fells - Castle Crag looked as Tolkeinesque as ever. Super food - the Cumberland breakfast is to die for- and the staff are so friendly and helpful.

User

It’s the special location that marks this out as THE place to stay not just in Borrowdale but in the whole of The Lakes. All the rooms (yes all of them!) look out on the fells and are spacious and superbly appointed. The whole place has a feeling of seclusion and you feel you’re right alongside all the flora and fauna - a deer walked right past my patio door this morning! The food is amazing and the friendly and efficient staff and service top everything off.

User

Have stayed at this hotel over the years quite a few times. It is difficult to explain the magic of the surroundings. ,however the added bonus is the hotel and staff. I have quite a few years under my belt .Location, comfort, service, meals and staff are without a doubt are five star. Apologies for going on and on but there is not a single word to describe it all.
